Incorporating the Physical Environment into New Media Design Pedagogy

This talk examines pragmatic ways to incorporate the physical environment into new media design pedagogy through a discussion of theoretical context and practical course projects. Framed by concepts including Foucault’s heterotopia and Debord’s psychogeography, and motivated by the urban exploration ethic articulated by the Situationist International and contemporary works such as the book Access All Areas, the online magazine Infiltration, the documentary film Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness, and the television program Off Limits, this talk positions digital spaces as constituent aspects of a broadly composite physical environment, rather than its ancillary complements.
