Sarah's analysis

The purpose of this data map is to inform its audience about US aid spending to specific areas by comparing it to the spending of other countries, which is what the map depicts. I sense that the audience would be politicians or even people who were interested in how the US spent its foreign aid money. The map has been formatted with a lot of information that would interest people who want to know about such things. I assume this map will communicate to people surfing the web due to its graphical nature or it could even be given as a full page handout, most likely near election time. This map uses different colors and types of statistical data, which give it the overall sense of truthfulness. Its uses of symbols that reference the countries it supplies information for is great in connecting data to its category. As stated before, I believe the final medium will either be a web page or handout because it does not contain links that would limit it to just the internet. The arrangement is good. It breaks it up between the two sections in the top and bottom and then gives two data examples for each section. The strongest elements of this design are the attention-grabbing colors and multiple statistical references. One area of improvement could be explaining what some of the acronyms are, like GNP and GDP, and explain briefly what they mean.

The sense of purpose of this map is to show how much government‘s spend on Aid to other countries. Well the features that show that are the upper images that show which country spends the most money. The bottom two graphs show the aid the United States give. The audience of the map would probably be someone who is trying to get the government to spend their money a different way or to show to other countries how much money we spend to help other countries. The context in which this map would be used would is maybe a newspaper to the general public. Also a presentation to show where the government’s money could be better spent. Some strategies they used would be they used bold colors to help emphasis the way the United States spent their money. The final medium would probably be for a poster or a slide of a presentation therefore all the focus is on the map itself. The medium helps se the sense of purpose because it helps direct all the focus to the map and nothing else. The arrangement of the map does suit its sense of purpose being it starts off showing what we spend compared to other countries and then breaks it down into what the United States spends. The strongest element of this map would have to be the statistics themselves. That we spend the most money compared to all the other countries while most of our aid goes to our recent war to help better the people in Iraq. The one thing that needs improvement is give what GNI means and what it is and maybe explain more what the graphs are trying to represent.

Sense of Purpose: It seems as if you are trying to make people aware about expenditures by different countries towards aid. Well first, the title is what lets me know that. Also the graphs clearly illustrate what statistics they are supposed to be representing. Also it seems to be trying to send a message about the US and their lack of aid.

Audience: The audience would consist of those who want to know the aid by different countries. It would be targeted towards the population, trying to make them aware of the spending around the world. They would not be interested in reading an entire document on how aid is distributed, but would like someone to lay it out for them visually.

Context: This type of media might be found on political websites, schools, or in public in a high pedestrian traffic area. Those who view it may care about what their country spends money on and would like to know such information.

Strategies: One strategy is the use of statistics and graphs to represent them. The graphs make it easier to understand what type of information you are trying to put out there to the population. Also, I noticed that the US’s bar is in red, to emphasize the amount we do spend and don’t spend.

Medium: The medium would be a poster most likely. It suits its purpose because it is trying to let the viewer know what aid each country is giving.

Arrangement: The arrangement consists of four graphs clearly defined in what they are trying to represent. Font size is different depending on the amount/emphasis the poster is trying to show.
Strongest Element: The strongest element would be that this media’s graphs are easily readable and color coded properly.

Areas of Improvement: I see that you are trying hard to distinguish what is what, but the top left of the map seems cluttered. Try finding a way to organize that more efficiently.
