First Draft Comment

-The purpose seems to be locating "fun" things to do in each city

-The audience is probably tourists to cities; people who haven't been there and would like to know what there is to do. It could also even be geared toward new residents looking for things to do on the weekends.

-The map appears as though it is going to be placed online, as the pushing of the pins make the map interactive. It is most likely going to be used prior to people going on trips, when they are planning, as it is sometimes difficult to access the internet when one is away from home.

-Strategies include the color coding of states, the non-plain text on the right hand side, and the images of pins on the map.

-The final medium for this piece would probably ideally be a website, possibly a basic Flash animation that will allow for interactivity. It allows it to fit into the context of being used online for trip planning, and the purpose and audience as many people use the internet for planning their trips.

-The data map is arranged with with the map of the United States on the left, and instructions on the right. There are pins over points of interest on the map.

-The strongest element of the map is the use of the pins I believe, it makes what you are supposed to do stand out, and easy to navigate.

-The element that needs most improvement is probably the right side. It just seems to be *there* and sitting, it could be spiced up a little bit. Maybe incorporate it into the map and give it some kind of cool design?

Overall, I think the map is good, and is on the right track to be successful.

Draft Workshop

1. The purpose of this data map is to let people know some interesting things to do in different locations around the US.
2. The audience of this map would be anyone who wants to go on vacation, or travel somewhere, but does not know where they would like to go.
3. The context of this data map would be good for a travel company's home page, such as TWA, in order to let people know where they could travel and for what reasons with their airline, bus, etc.
4. The map's strategy is is showing the geographical location of places of interest while showing what exactly is interesting about those places. This does suit the sense of purpose, audience, and context. If someone wanted to go somewhere warm, and wanted to know what was there, they could make good use of this map.
5. The final medium for this would probably be a flash program. It seems as if it is supposed to be a little interactive, and a flash program would work well for a web site for a company.
6. The map is arranged geographically. If the user wants to find out what is fun in Texas, the person just clicks on the state of Texas on the map and he or she has the corresponding information.
7. The strongest element of this data map is the geographical arrangement, and the interactivity with the user. These two elements combined make the experience of this data map much better to the user.
8. The weakest element on this data map is probably how many different locations have points of interest. For this map to be really useful, there should be a lot more information about a lot more different locations.

Project 1 First Draft

Sense of purpose

- This map’s sense of purpose is to give the viewer an interactive map of interesting locations to visit in the country, with hopes of enticing the viewer to visit these locations. The map features a map of the continental US, along with thumbtacks at various locations of interest to the reader.

Audience

- Adult travelers. Layout is simple but assumes knowledge of states and cities described by markers, laid out in similar format used by airlines.

Context

- The intended viewer is in a place, or point in time when/where he or she is able to travel. This could possibly be a display at an airport, an ad in a travel magazine, placed during or approaching a time of vacation.

Strategies

- Visual simplicity, use of a multicolored map, use of thumbtacks. These strategies suit the sense of purpose by allowing the intended viewer to grasp the information easily and in a format typically used by airlines, travel agencies etc.

Medium

- Large visual display. Text is sparse, image is simple. This allows the viewer to extract the information in crowded areas, on the move, or amidst many visual distractions.

Arrangement

- Concise, simple lay out, directly tied to statement of purpose. Allows viewer to easily navigate through information.

Strongest element

- Thumbtacks used to point out locations.

Improvement

- More unique design, more detail (names of cities).

Peer Review

-The purpose of the map is to provide users a chance to locate various entertainment in popular U.S. travel destinations.
-This is not clear yet, simply because we cannot view what is included in each city. Given that the map will appear as a Web page, I take it that the audience consists of Internet users. The font, etc., seems to lean towards a younger crowd (kids?).
-This is puzzling, because I'm fairly sure that there's not a lack of information about what different cities -- especially those popular cities -- have to offer in the way of entertainment. However, perhaps this map is intended to act as a "one-stop" place to shop for entertainment opportunities across the U.S.
-It uses graphic elements to its benefit. The push pins make cute buttons, especially on a map.
-Clearly it will appear online... I wonder what sites will include links to it. Will it be linked from travel Web sites? Airline sites? Is it part of a greater Web site? If it's meant for a younger audience -- kids, for example, it's unlikely that they'd be making airline reservations themselves.
-I think there may be some disparity between the map's "tone" and its intended audience. Without seeing the interactive elements in action, this is difficult to determine -- I may be way off.

The purpose of this is to

The purpose of this is to persuade people to travel to the cities listed on the map. It is made out of a desire to get people out and check out the coast. This addresses the problem of travel information being difficult to find, and overwhelming – this map conglomerates the data about attractions, and puts them into an easy to use interface.

Because of the use of exclamation points in the title, and the use of push pins as objects, this could either be geared towards elementary school aged children or people at a travel agency website. Since fun is emphasized, it indicates travelers are the audience. These people would be ones who don’t necessarily know how to find information by themselves about a city, so they would go to a travel agency. Since they are traveling, they have disposable income.

This is used on a travel agency’s website, such as www.travelocity.com, or other travel sources. It is used to expose viewers to information about cities they otherwise would not have seen elsewhere.
The title is the main strategy I see in this work. It uses an energetic tone, and it is off to the side, which draws the eyes to the words.

Something to work on: Label the cities. I know that the people will be clicking on the push pins, but it does not look very appealing without the titles of the cities listed. It actually takes a little work to figure out which cities they are, which would detract from the purpose.
