Discussion Forum #9

In preparation for Discussion Forum #9, each student will independently identify a game and explain why it is worthy of critique. In so doing, students should consider questions such as:

  • What thematic issues does the game address?
  • How does the game confront social constructs, such as race, class, gender, and socioeconomic status?
  • How does the game utilize its play mechanics to cause a particular intellectual or emotional responses in the player?
  • How can the game be used didactically?
  • How does the game connect with other games (or other creative works)?
  • What scholarly lenses may be productively applied to the game?

Each student will identify a game and provide a ~500 word defense of its value as an object of critical study. The preceding prompts may help students focus their thoughts, but they are free to take their discussions in any productive direction. I look forward to reading the responses and discussing them in class.
