Appended below is a list of manifestos that articulate the principles of various aesthetic approaches. (The list is a bit culturally biased because it only includes texts written in English or with an extant English translation.) The manifestos demonstrate that design is not arbitrary but interested—connected to histories, ideologies, and ethics. Students will produce two drafts of each Publics Project document (book jacket, DVD cover, CD cover). Each draft should be influenced by one of the aesthetic approaches identified below. Using aesthetic approaches allows us to examine our work through different lenses, but we shouldn't feel inhibited by them. Use them as jumping-off points rather than rigid rules. Students should review the manifestos before making their selections. It is helpful to do supplementary research about chosen aesthetic approaches. (These manifestos often are dense, jargon-filled, cryptic, ergodic, or otherwise difficult to comprehend, so they require sustained attention.)
