Reading Notes

Unless otherwise indicated, for each class meeting you are expected to bring in notes covering the assigned readings. (Notes cover a day's whole reading assignment. Different reading notes are not required for each particular reading in a day's assignment.) Notes should summarize the main ideas in readings, using quotations where appropriate, and identify the points you believe are most important. They also should offer questions, commentary, and points that the reading didn't address. These notes will allow you to contribute productively during class discussion. They are meant to demonstrate that you are engaging course material and to prepare you for the exams.

Reading Notes should:

  • be printed pages containing 300-600 words
  • be turned in before the beginning of class (so you are encouraged to keep an electronic version for yourself)
  • summarize the main ideas
  • include relevant quotations
  • provide commentary on the material
  • ask questions about the material or identify unaddressed points
  • demonstrate your engagement with the material by focusing more on commentary, questions, and gaps than summary
