Reading Notes

Unless otherwise indicated, for each class meeting you are expected to bring in notes discussing the assigned readings. (Notes cover a whole reading assignment. Different reading notes are not required for each individual reading in an assignment.) Notes should summarize the main ideas in readings, using quotations where appropriate, and identify the points you believe are most important. They also should offer questions and commentary that you have or points that the reading didn't address. As the semester moves forward, notes should connect the current reading with previous readings and outside sources. These notes will allow you to contribute productively during class discussion and help prepare you for your papers and exams.

Reading Notes should:

  • contain ~600 words
  • be submitted electronically as file attachments
  • be turned in before the beginning of class (you are encouraged to keep a duplicate or electronic version for yourself)
  • summarize the main ideas
  • include relevant quotations
  • ask questions about the material, offer comments, and identify unaddressed points
  • connect current material with previous readings and outside sources
