Teaching Presentation

Each student will devise and present a classroom assignment for UNCW's ENG 101 course (course guidelines here). The assignment may cover any aspect of composition, but it must stand alone and not require previous reading or writing by students. It is crucial to focus the assignment on composition rather than associated subjects such as creative writing or literature criticism.

The Teaching Presentation assignment comprises a handout that will be submitted to the instructor as a file attachment and a live demonstration of the lesson. Examples from previous students are available in the "Student Teaching Demonstrations" section of Dr. Tony Atkins's ENG 503 website.

Handouts should contain:

  • Title (name of assignment or what it will address)
  • Rationale (why this assignment is valuable)
  • Goals (what students should gain/improve by engaging with the lesson)
  • Steps (the procedures to complete the assignment)
  • Evaluation (how the assignment is assessed)
  • Citation (any works the assignment draws upon)

Presentations should:

  • Begin with a brief overview of the assignment
  • Contain a demonstration of the assignment in which the class serves as pupils
  • Be flexible to allow for questions and complications
  • Last no more than 30 minutes
