Augustine (354–430)

  • Endorsed a classical model of emulation and practice rather than codification
  • Parses up truth from eloquence (or its representation)
  • Ciceronian
    • to teach (instruct) , to please, to move
  • Is completely fine with plagiarism, because Truth belongs to God (not the individual)

  • On Christian Doctrine
    • Augustine claims this isn't a codification of rules.
    • Recalling Aristotle, he states that obviously lies can be attractive, so it's foolish to believe that truth shouldn't be similarly powerful.
    • However, scriptural truth shouldn't be distorted, but it should be presented to best advantage.
