Responses are brief documents that formalize thoughts about material. They will be submitted electronically and read aloud in class. (An archive of Response will be available on this site.) They facilitate productive class discussions and help individuals prepare to complete exams and papers. Responses should fit on one 8.5" X 11" page (both sides).

Effective Responses should:

• Fit onto one 8.5" X 11" page (both sides)
• be submitted electronically as file attachments before class
• be brought to class (electronically or in print) for reading aloud
• offer interpretations of and questions about the corresponding material
• connect the corresponding material with previous readings and outside sources
• include relevant quotations from the material
• Identify an external text that may be relevant to the corresponding material or the course's theme
