Locate an example of a service learning project online, and then post a comment of at least 200 words that responds the following prompts:

  1. Paste the project's link.
  2. Summarize the project.
  3. Explain what skills and/or knowledge students obtain from the project.
  4. Explain how a community or organization benefits from the project.
  5. Provide a definition of service learning. What commonalities do all service learning projects share?

Service Learning Project

2.Students used donated out of date computer equipment to construct computer systems for home use by students' families in the community that did not own a computer. The purpose was to remove obstacles that would hinder a family from having computer access. And to develop the computer's users knowledge of computing systems to increase their career and academic success.

3.Skills / knowledge that students obtained from the projects included, hardware repair, operating systems knowledge, configuration , and troubleshooting. The impact of technology on society was at the forefront, because those in the community who could not afford a computer were left behind in a world that is driven by email, Facebook, Google, and YouTube.

4.The members of the school community benefited from the project, by gaining academic, professional, and personal use of the computers. This might spark a further interest in computer technology, and lead to the desire for training that would lead to a job in the information systems field. With everyone in the community having access to a computer, teachers can raise student performance expectations.

5.According to www.nylc.org service learning is a teaching and learning process that meets specific community needs and learning goals. They are engaging service activities that address the needs that are important to the client.

Service Learning Exercise

1. http://www.paservicelearning.org/Project_Ideas/Halloween.htm

2. I chose the high school service learning project to focus on. This project is specified to Halloween night and ensuring the safety of young trick-or-treaters. It is highlighting the fact that there are dangers with keeping lit candles inside carved pumpkins. The design of this project is telling the high school students to partner up with the local fire department to get the message out there, that there are risks to candles in pumpkins. The goal is to inform people on what specific candles to use, to never leave the pumpkin unattended, and to keep it away from things that could potentially be flammable.

3. The skills that are going to be used during this project are being able to work in groups of people that are not different than the high schooler's normal groups. They will also learn to create posters and advertising to be able to get the word out about the dangers of open flames. Those students will also learn about fire safety as well.

4. The community will learn the safety precautions to take when it comes to using candles in pumpkins. It will make the community aware of the dangers that could potentially happen if the flame is not looked after.

5. I think community service projects are projects that incorporate students and community service. All of these projects are similar because they all have the same premise. They all are based upon the students working out in the community and providing service for the people in need.

2. The service project i chose is based out of schools in Chicago. The teachers decided to incorporate service projects with the everyday curriculum. In the environmental studies class the students are learning the importance of biodiversity. The teacher contacted the local forest preserve and organized a trip to study plant and animal life at the preserve including invasive species. The students spent the day clearing a prairie of invasive buckthorn. The class decided to return to continue their work clearing invasive plants because they learned that native plants only flourish if invasive plants are contained.

3. After the project was over the students were required to reflect on their experiences. The teachers noticed an increased level of student enthusiasm, performance, and engagement in the classroom. "Service-learning projects enable students to bridge the gap between theory and practice as well as between classroom and community," said one of the teachers.

4. The community benefitted by this particular service project because it is difficult for native plants to flourish unless invasive plants are held to a minimum. Since the students spent the day clearing invasive plants the native plants will be able to grow without any problems.

5. Service learning is a method used to not only teach, but to engage students or volunteers about the problems our communities are facing on a daily basis.

Learning Service

1. http://www.nylc.org/pages-resourcecenter-projectexamples-Teens_Against_T...

2. 8th grade students in Wisconsin, working in their Language Arts class on their advertising and mass media unit, chose to work with the relevant community issue, teen pregnancy. They wrote, designed, and participated in the production of both a television and print version public service announcement. The ads would be run during their statewide Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. The community became more aware and preventative of teen pregnancy, while the students were able to gather critical experience with media and advertising.

3. The students were working on their Language Arts, Advertising and Mass Media unit. Through this service learning project they were able to gather quite an array of skill and knowledge. They were able to gain a firsthand understanding of how exactly to target a particular audience. To accompany this, the students also gain experience while creating a focused, persuasive, and professional message for that audience. On top of this, the students were also able to expand on their leadership and collaboration skills.

4. The community state wide as well as surrounding this Wisconsin school will benefit through awareness. Those community members who read news papers or watch television during Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month will be able to gain understanding of that serious problem. The students also aimed at raising awareness among their peers.

5. My definition of service learning would be:

Learning a skill or knowledge while teaching others your skill or knowledge.

All service learning project must share an element of reciprocal growth. Both parties are growing while sharing; both are teachers and students at the same time.

Service Learning Project

1.) http://www.paservicelearning.org/Project_Ideas/magpi.htm

2.)As the webiste summarizes, the service learning project "Stand Up. Speak Out. Lend a Hand!" is designed to promote tolerance, social activism and anti-violence. It is available to high school students, as well as other students of higher education levels via videoconference on the mentioned scheduled dates. Ther project honors Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein as she helps educate others on the effects of extremism and violence. Each school that becomes involved will generate their own service learning project on the topic of "Social Issues in the Community." Students challenge themselves with these projects for 60 days and fight against extremism and hunger.

3.)Students will obtain the knowlege of using technology such as videoconferencing, as well as any other technology they choose to incorporate in their service learning project.

4.)The community will benefit from the school's service learning project as members in the community will become educated on prevalent social issues within their own community, how they can help cease and prevent these issues, and will learn more about the effects of extremism and violence.

5.)Service learning can be viewed as an education program for the public which can be targeted towards teaching a group of people about the effects and preventative methods of relevant social issues. All service projects share the common ground of people voluntarily participating in the program to educate others on a certain topic.

Service Learning Project

http://www.nylc.org/pages-resourcecenter-projectexamples-Understanding_W...

Understanding War: 8th grade students were studying war and why countries go to war. They were learning about war from many different perspectives including Eli Weisel's "Night" and the writings of Anne Frank. The students paired with volunteers from a local VFW post and interviewed World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans on two occasions to get a first hand persepctive. The veterans returned to the school for a third session to share war memorabilia, medals, and pictures. The students wrote histories and poems of appreciation, and worked with the veterans to design and create a quilt symbolizing the connection between war and peace.

The students were able to hear about war from people that have been involved in it. It made a connection from young to old, past and present. The students were able to get a more accurante depiction of war and peace and were able to better understand why countries engage in warfare.

"Although this project was designed to help students form a more accurate picture of violence and war, the veterans learned as much from their interviewers as the students learned from them." The veterans left feeling more appriciated and the students were more knowledable about soldiers and war experiences. It created a level of understanding in the community that wasn't there before.

Service learning is when students are actively participating in the project and getting hands on experience. They relate what they are learning about to the real world and how it applys. Service learning projects allow students to get a real life example of what they are learning about in classrooms and opens up their perspective on the topic.

Students in Politics

http://www.nylc.org/pages-resourcecenter-projectexamples-Students_in_Politics?emoid=20:414&null=1256259295427

Students attending a Minnesota middle school, that were enrolled in a politics course, worked in small groups as lobbyists for pending bills in their state legislature. The students were helped by local lobbying organizations, and first researched different issues, then could lobby for or against the bills to fix these issues, depending on their individual opinions. Afterwords, they designed signs, wrote position papers, a presented their ideas to the class.

Following the project, the students received letters from their state legislatures. The pre-teens also received a sense of knowledge in the political world; and they realized they can made a difference and be proud of it.

This project urges political involvement within the community, as well as broader regions, which is important in our democratic nation.

Service Learning is similar to an internship; it is a way for students to gain hands-on experience using what they have learned in the classroom, combined with the inner workings of a process or topic that can only be learned from actually performing or analyzing it. All service learning projects must involve or mimic that process or topic for students to gain accurate knowledge of it.

http://www.nylc.org/pages-resourcecenter-projectexamples-Wetland_With_Pr...

2. The Project I choose was done by sixth graders in Wisconsin. They identified an area of their community that had become completely unmaintained and very polluted. After researching the area, the students found that it was at one time a lake. The students tilled a great deal of the land and planted flowers. They then went one step further and had the land escavated so that it would once again be returned to a sediment pond. This created a wetland and allowed natural filtration of many of the pollutants that had degraded the area.

3. Students learn the importance of restoring polluted areas from this project. What was at one time a serene lake became a vast degraded region. The students did their research and obtained the permission needed to return this place into a wetland. This project demonstrates alot about being environmentally conscious and the importance of perserving your environment.

4. The community benefitted asthetically from this project because they restored the entire area. It now has the capacity to filter pollutants and provide a great deal of habitat for a varity of different organisms.

5. Service learning is a way to incorporate a classroom curriculum into a meaningful, constructive project. People or students volunteer their time to complete the project both themselves and the community benefit.

Service Learning Exercise

http://www.nylc.org/pages-resourcecenter-projectexamples-Beyond_Jungle_G...

While sitting around during a class, students realized that while they had a playground was filled with slides, and swings, and all sorts of recreational devices, it sorely lacked picnic tables. So the class came together and planned out what they wanted to do, and where they wanted to position the tables. The students wanted room to eat, sit and talk, and play board games. The students participated in every bit of the construction of the picnic tables besides running the power tools.

The students learned many things from this project. For starters, they learned the importance of having a desire to do good. A student simply stating a desire for picnic tables resulted in this grand project, which is a positive image for a child to have. The students also learned the power of teamwork as they put the tables together helping one another.

The entire school community benefited from the project, as did all future classes. Every class that subsequently uses the picnic tables will do so thanks to the class that put them together. These students in turn, will have a desire to help the school and so on.

I would consider service learning a form of learning that benefits both he who does the project, and the community in which he does it. All service learning projects have benefits to more than just the person completely the project.

Service Learning: Recycling

1. http://www.paservicelearning.org/Project_Ideas/Environmental.htm

2. This is an environmental project where students create a recycling program for their school or try to improve their existing program. Students will have to work with their administrators to implement their ideas. They will also have to make members of their school community aware of their project and aware of why recycling is important.

3. The students would be leaning a great deal about the environment and what renewable resources it has to offer. They will be learning about human consumption and its impact on the environment. Students also learn how to interact with members of their community that they might not normally talk to or see. They will have to learn how their community deals with it’s trash and recyclables and gain a better understanding of how public systems work in general.

4. The community benefits by getting more awareness of the environmental impact of recycling. An improved recycling system in a school can potentially spread to other businesses and organizations throughout the community as well as in homes.

5. Service learning is doing something with the objective of learning about a topic and providing something to a group or community. All service learning projects help and create awareness for a cause. All service learning projects teach skills.

1.

1. http://www.dare.com/home/default.asp
2. DARE is one of the most popular educational programs in the United States to try and help prevent the abuse of alcohol and drugs among children and teenagers. They start the programs at a young age and educate on the negative effects of peer pressure, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. Their sole purpose is to get their point across BEFORE children are faced with the decision of choosing drugs or alcohol...So they will know the negative effects ahead of time which will hopefully positively influence their decisions.
3. There are different sections on the website. For example "3 cigarettes a day can kill you," "marijuana today is more intoxicating than 30 years ago," etc. In other words, DARE's purpose is to make an impact on children to prevent the temptation of using drugs as they grow older.
4. DARE goes around to different schools around the country and conducts seminars and classes. They give presentations and hand-out booklets/brochures, as well as make the learning process fun. For example, they turned an Escalade into a "tricked out" teaching tool in order to keep the kid's attention.
5. A service learning project is created with the sole purpose of protecting a group of people (the age, etc. varies)from negative situations, or possible harm that could occur. They tend to be non-profit organizations that accept donations but are run by volunteers.

The Honduras Project

http://www.bccymca.org/seasons/definitions/servicelearning/index.htm

2. After finding out that students in Honduras didn't have books, a group of American middle school students created the honduras project. The American students wrote letters to their peers in spanish, raised money and charted the progress of their fundraising, and ultimately raised $1,000 for the project. All of that money was used to by books for the Honduras students.

3. According to the web site, the students gained skills in spanish, reading, math, geography, art, and design. By writing in spanish, the students got to practice conversing with another culture in that culture's native language. By keeping track of their earnings, the students used their math skills. Art and design skills came into use when creating the cards to send to the kids in Honduras. And finally, reading and geography were used when researching about Honduras.

4. This class benefited from this several ways. First, the class was able to learn many core skills by creating the Honduras Project. But more importantly, they got to feel the accomplishment of truly changing someone's life. Hopefully those students will be more inclined in the future to do more service learning activities.

5. Service learning means giving your time to someone in need, and not expecting anything in return. The one thing that all service learning project have in common is that everyone benefits after it is over. The children in Honduras received new books, and the American children learned what it was like to give a helping hand to someone in need.

Service Learning

1. http://www.paservicelearning.org/Project_Ideas/English.html

2. One of the ideas that is listed on the link is a book drive. A book drive is the collection of new and lightly used books to be sold, usually cheaply, at a place such as a school.

3. Students learn a lot about ogranization and teamwork skills. Book drives take a lot of cooperation with students, faculty and community members. Setting up the book drive could teach one a lot about presentation and ogranization.

4. A book drive's benefits are obvious. Allowing community members cheap access to reading materials will better prepare their children for the future and combat illiteracy rates.

5. My definition of service learning would be the combination of a beneficial project and a educational experience into one event.

Service Learning Project

1. http://www.mssa.sailorsite.net/fea_04_07.html

2. At Oakdale Middle School in Frederick County, Maryland, technology students created custom made t-shirts for chronic patients on ventilators at Western Maryland Hospital Center. These t-shirts were given as holiday gifts to the patients, because many of them have little or no family. On these shirts were pictures or words about their favorite activities, hobbies, or interests. According to the hospital's volunteer coordinator, the residents wear t-shirts all of the time but many times they are donated by companies and the patients dislike them, and that they were extremely appreciated and excited to receive these unique gifts. Overall, the project was a huge success.

3. Students learned to use multiple design programs as well as the internet to design the shirts for the patients. They used a Color-CAMM printer to print their designs onto iron-on-transfers. Using Microsoft Publisher, they created holiday cards for the patients.

4. The students worked with the Western Maryland Hospital Center's volunteer coordinator to benefit the patients on ventilators. All of these patients were very appreciative of these students actions.

5. I feel like service learning is working on a project that is beneficial to others in the community or an organization, while gaining skills to apply in the future. All service learning projects should benefit others, and should challenge you to learn new skills and abilities.

Service Learning Project Example

1. http://www.nylc.org/pages-resourcecenter-projectexamples-We_are_the_ISP?...
2. After a local internet service provider went out of bussiness and left the area, students decided to try to replicate its services and provide the internet to members of the community who lost it. Through the school's technology and computer programming department, students were able to provide internet access to 450 people in the community and even assertained the necessary materials to provide a wireless broadband signal.
3. Students gained hands on experience working with technology. Specifically, they learned how to set up a network and disseminate access to various locations in their surrounding community.
4. The community benefited by re-gaining internet access. Even more so, students worked with a local senior center to teach them about the internet and give them access through the student run internet service provider. They also assisted the seniors with any computer needs they may have had.
5. According to servicelearning.org, service learning can be defined as teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience. All service learning projects share the community aspect, and a common goal to better both one's own knowledge of a topic as well as further the community as a whole.

Service Learning Project Ideas

http://ysa.org/Portals/0/PDF%20Documents/hunger_and_homelessness.pdf

The previous link, sponsored by State Farm, provides an introduction to service learning for those who have no experience with it. It is a general guide whose audience is educators and students alike. It supposes the same core concepts for all grade levels from elementary to college, but the difficulty and complexity of the project should reflect one's educational level. Among the many ideas presented in this paper, combatting poverty and homelessness is the example provided. The author's suggest doing one's research by visiting any number of national websites to discover more about one's topic. Also provided are suggestions, such as starting neighborhood organizations to fight violence, writing letters to public officials about safety laws, monitoring legislations at state and local levels, and working with state and local officials, or even celebrities, to promote one's service project. This link may be found at the service project clearinghouse website, where ideas for service projects run from art classes for a senior center to advocacy programs for the domestically abused.

Service Learning Project

1. http://www.nylc.org/pages-programs-initiatives-Y_RISE_Service_Learning_a...

2. Y-RISE (Youth Replicating Innovative Strategies and Excellence in HIV/AIDS prevention). It is Aan HIV/AIDS project dedicated to making this pandemic more of a focal point all while empowering and training young people to educate their peers.

3. Students will gain knowledge on HIV/ADIS and on how serious it really is. They will also learn that even though they might not be able to find the cure they can help advocate those i the position do so,

4. Some communities could be directly impacted due the rate of HIV/AIDS in the are. Depending on the community of course; however, even the neighborhoods who have a fewer number can still obtain knowledge on how to keep that number down!

5. Service learning in my opinion is a win-win situation. You do a good deed all the while learning a new fact, trait, or gaining a characteristic. Most SL projects deal with the youth./teens.
