Interlocking Proposals: In Car Breathalyzers

weekly discussions
The following website describes a proposal for breathalyzers to be installed in cars. What this does is when an intoxicated subject blows too high, the car's ignition would lock to prevent a drunk from starting and driving the vehicle. There is some debate over these kinds of devises and the overall expense of installation. It is a good idea to uses these mechanisims to prevent DUI's, but will the public see the worth if it means spending even more money on a vehicle? http://www.abionline.org/newsDetail.cfm?nid=144

Rediculous!!!

I think that this is rediculous. If they are trying to prevent drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel they should just set up more check points for that. I think that this would be a very big inconvience for people. To have to get into the car and blow into this brethalyzer everytime seems like a huge waste of time. The money that it would take to do so would be insane. I never think that this would fly with car producers because they would have to change every car that came out brand new.

Good Idea

I think this is a good idea. Drunk driving is stupid and should not be tolerated. If people know that they drink, this can help them stay responsible even though they might not be acting responsible at the time. Now, will people think it is important enough to put more money in their car? Unfortunately probably not.

Sounds Great but Costly

This sounds like a good idea to prevent intoxicated persons from driving. The only problem I see is in the cost. It seems to me that the price is pretty saltly for one unit and installation. It might be alright if the intoxicated driver had to pay for it in a way similar to a fine.
I do like the idea of just revoking an intoxicated driver's license after their first offense, but this does not prevent them from driving without a license. This in car breathalyzer test is a solution to that problem.

way too intrusive

Interlocks would be used in the perfect society. Unfortunately, in the real world we have to deal with the rights of idiots who drink and drive. If interlocks were installed for free by the government (with tax money obviously) then the only people who would have to worry about them are drunk drivers. But I agree that it's too imposing to have to do a breathalyzer to go to the grocery store.

Deal with it!

I don't think it is a big deal at all for this. If you were dumb enough to get behind the wheel drunk the first time then you may do it again. A kid I graduated with got three duis before graduation and two were at the same stop sign. If the thing stops one person from getting killed it is worth it in my opinion. With the cost factor, they screwed up and they have to pay the fee, its not like they have to drive.

hahahaha

wow. i mean, im not a fan of drunk driving, but seriously? do these people really think this is likely? im pretty sure this is just a silly idea that will go away. im sure there would be a way to find out if this would work, but honestly, shouldnt we be focusing on the why of the DUI problems? of course we should adress the problem of drunk driving, but i dont think this is a way to do it.

mixed feelings

I think that this is actually a good idea, in the sense that they really do want to prevent drunk people from getting behind the wheel, which is of course preventing people from getting killed. However, I just don't really think people, including myself, would want to pay for something like that as a feature for a car. But I think that people who are drinking on a weekend basis and feel this could prevent them from killing someone, then yes I think this is a very good idea, for them. I don't think it's a necessary thing to have though.
