How to... Kip
Draft Workshop

1. The purpose of this data map is to tell someone how to do a "Kip," as clearly stated on the data map.
2. The audience of this data map would be anyone interested in gymnastics who is trying to learn the basics. This seems so because the "Kip" does not look like something crazy I would see in the Olympics, and it has a step-by-step guide for people who do not know what they are doing.
3. The strategies this map uses is the picture of each step of the Kip, and the verbal steps of the Kip in the middle, where it is most prominent.
4. The final medium of this data map seems like it would be a poster. If put in the gymnasium where the gymnastics club or school team practices. This way anyone who is coming there for the first time will have a good guide to learning their first gymnastics move.
5. The map is arranged with the verbal explanation in the middle, and pictures of each step, in order, along the border. It does seem to convey the data well.
6. The strongest element of this map is the verbal steps in the center of the map. I think it emphasizes the verbal guide to the kip, which is good because the person attempting the kip should know everything about it before doing it, rather than just trying to imitate a picture.
7. The pictures around the border need a slight amount of improvement. Just by glancing at it, I do not know which image comes first in the routine and which is last. Maybe the images could be numbered, as are the verbal steps, to help people understand this.

The purpose of this data map

The purpose of this data map is to show people who are strating gymnastics on how to do a kip. The title works on informing the audience what the data map is about. The context works with what you want to accomplish.

I can see that the final medium for this map could be a poster that would be next to the equipment. It suits its purpose and audience and context.

The strongest element will be the middle of the map. It gives instructions, while the outside pictures help understand the instructions.

I think it would greatly help the audience if you numbered the pictures so that the user knows what they should look like at the first step and so on. Also, if you could soften the outside and highlight the position you are at so that it is easier to see. If you notice from the thumbnail you see alot of yellow and blue. If you could eliminate some of this it would make it more easier to follow and less busy.

My thoughts

The maps sense of purpose is to explain and show to someone how to perform a Kip. The maps title in the middle clearly says thats what it's all about. The audience for this map would be people interested in learning gymnastics or atleast learning more about gymnastics. The context for this map is probably a poster or something that is large so that each of the individual images are large enough that the audience can tell what is happening. The basic strategy here is to actually show the audience step by step how to perform the Kip. In addition to the images, there is a list of steps written out. This gives the audience a second type of communication. They can read about how to perform it and actually see that stage of it being performed. I am assuming thats what the steps written out are for because the thumbnail of this image is far too small to actually read the text. The medium I think will be a print media. This will be a poster size printed graphic. I think this because it will have to be large so that the individual images are of a decent size. The arrangement is a sequence of snap shots that shows how to perform a kip step by step. This works really well, and I think its the best part of the data map, however, my least favorite part is that i don't see any numbers on the images to show the sequence. I would think to read this clockwise starting from the upper left, but to me its not clear. Adding those numbers to help guide the audience and maybe even correlate to the numbered explanation in the middle will make a big difference.
