This map wants to state where music festivals are and the amount of people that attend them. I would assume that the audience are people that want to check out where they can rock out. The context could be posted on a website that directs people toward different concerts. The map’s strategies are simple. They list the amount of people that attend and the location and name of the festival. Possibly providing names of people at the concert could be added to the map. The medium could be a poster if it were needed for a speech, but I would expect it to be located on a site that promotes and sells tickets to different festivals. The arrangement simply uses bubbles to give a generic geographical location of the festivals. The size of the bubble helps the visualization of how crowded the festival will be. Color helps distinguish the different parts. The statistics provide the strongest element about this map. I think that more data needs to be gathered. It seems that not many festivals are around. Possibly a clearer sense of purpose will reveal that the map has plenty of information in it.

The sense of purpose of this

The sense of purpose of this map is to inform music lovers about the size of different music festivals around the country, probably to help them make a choice in which one they want to visit based on size. People that want smaller festivals can consult this map to choose the right one for them.
The audience for this map would be someone that wants to start going to music festivals. Someone that has never been to a festival will probably find this map quite useful to determine which festival they would like to attend.
The map is likely to be seen as a graphic on a web page, possibly of someone trying to get information to concert goers across the country. It could help explain these festivals to people that have never attended them before.
This map uses a strategy of making the graphical area for each concert bigger or smaller depending on the size of the festival. With minimal reading someone can glance at this map and determine the relative size of the festivals to each other as well as the location of the festival. This would help someone make a decision quickly on which festivals to attend.
The final medium of this piece would most likely be a web site informing people about various music festivals. It would serve as a reference to people on the relative sizes of festivals around the country. This would help support the audience of concert goers to help them make informed decisions.

The purpose of this map is to give information as to where music festivals are in the United States. The title of the map gave it away…

The audience of this map would seem to be people moving in to a new area of America and want to find out where the nearest concert area is located. Particularly music fans would be most interested. This is clear because the numbers in the picture seem to represent the size of the stadium (how many people it can hold). I can’t think of anyone who would want to know this information besides music fans.

The context of this map would be on a music internet website. When buying tickets or researching information to buy tickets to a concert, many fans turn to an internet database. When seeking the best place to view your favorite music artist why not run across this map to find the most bangin’ festival.

One strategy used is the appearance of the United States. One color with no borders to represent individual states makes it easy to see the general location of each concert. The fact that it represents a unity-of-states makes the purpose clear; it just wants to show the general area as to where fans can find music.

The maps final medium would be a pixelated image on a website dedicated to music.

The arrangement of the map is very simple. It is only based on the actual locations of each concert arena. So the fact that concert locations make up the arrangement better helps suite the whole idea, to inform.

The strongest information would be the facts. To know stadium sizes and exact locations is a big help to finding the greatest concerts.

The weakest point of this map would have to be its lack of information. It seems that America is falling short of places to hold concerts. Suppose there were more stadiums mentioned in the data map, it would be much more helpful to the audience.

Project 1 First Draft

Sense of purpose

- This map’s sense of purpose is to give the viewer an interactive map of music festival locations to visit in the country, with hopes of enticing the viewer to visit these festivals. The map features a map of the continental US, along with bubbles containing brief information about each of the various locations.

Audience

- Adults, music lovers (rock n’ roll), travelers. Layout is simple but assumes knowledge of states abbreviations. Layout is colorful and simple enough to print on fabric, perhaps on a T-shirt.

Context

- The intended viewer is in a place, or point in time when/where he or she is able to travel or is interested in listening to live music. This could possibly be a large display at a concert, a T-shirt design, ad in a music brochure.

Strategies

- Visual simplicity, use of a multicolored map, use of bubbles with simple info. These strategies suit the sense of purpose by allowing the intended viewer to grasp the information easily and in a format allowing it to be discerned from afar.

Medium

- Large visual display or small accessory display. Text is sparse, image is simple. This allows the viewer to extract the information quickly, from far distances, on the move, or amidst many visual distractions.

Arrangement

- Concise, simple lay out, directly tied to statement of purpose. Allows viewer to easily navigate through information.

Strongest element

- Bubbles in proportionate size to expected audience at each location.

Improvement

- More visually appealing design (colors), larges font for names of cities and info.
