- Provide a few sentences of introduction about yourself. Who are you? What are your interests?
- Provide a few sentences about your expectations for this class. Is it so far what you expected it to be? What do you expect to get out of it? What caused you to enroll in this class rather than say a business writing class?
- Since I'm asking about you, ask one question of me.
My name is Acacia Wood and I am a senior majoring in math education. I will be student teaching next semester and am very excited about that. I like to sing. I am from Indianapolis, and am a huge Colts fan. Purdue football’s okay, too. I don’t really know what to expect from this class. English was never my forte, but I had to take another English class. Business writing and technical writing just sounded dull, so I chose this one.
Submitted by polkastripe on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 16:56.So, my question of you…Where did you get your Bachelor’s Degree and in what?
My name is Markus Horstmeyer and I am a senior in Actuarial Science. I do club gymnastics here at Purdue, and am the secretary of the Free Running club here at purdue as well. In continual efforts to find enjoyment out of life, I tend to be a source of entertainment to my friends. The Venture Bros. is an excellent show.
I enrolled in this class because I thought it would be more intersting than normal business writing. I don’t really know what to expect of it, but I do want to become more technologically adept than what I currently am. I expect to be confused a lot and learn much.
Mr. Tirrell,
Submitted by mhorstme on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 16:57.Since you watch Venture Bros., do you also watch other adult swim cartoons. Perhaps Aqua teen hunger? With that... how old are you that we can relate to our teacher on such a personal and favorable level?
1. I'm Aris Aurellano - I like football (big Colts fan), basketball, and all sorts of music. I'm a junior of the College of Technology. I'm a CGT major with an emphasis on IMD, primarily web design/content.
Submitted by aaurella on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 16:57.2. I expect to have a better understanding of primarily multimedia writing after I finish the class. I enrolled in this class as opposed to the others because it's geared more towards my interest and career path.
3. What's your favorite major league team from any sport?
My name is Brian Otten. I actually live in Indianapolis. Most of my interests involve technology, soccer, some Japanese stuff(language, Kendo, etc.) Venture Bros. Rocks. I can be a geek at times. I was given a general idea by one of my friends who took this class and am looking forward to doing some of the projects assigned. The reason I enrolled into this class is because I am happier doing things other than writing essays and such, also I am transferring into CGT so I felt this course was applicable. How long have you been doing this course?
Submitted by InvisiblebiRON on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 16:59.I am Dan Paulat, and I have several activities here on and off campus. I am treasurer and academic chair of Tau Kappa Epsilon, a social fraternity here at Purdue, and am also an undergraduate lab teaching assistant for CS 177 and CS 192. In addition to that, I also work as a cashier at Best Buy, although I am expecting a transfer to the Computers department soon.
I am a Computer Science major, so I figured out of the three English courses that I had a choice of, this would probably be the most beneficial to me, as well as the most interesting. I really do not know what I expect to get out of the course, but I'm sure I will figure out within the next few classes.
As for the question for you, what do you do outside of teaching?
Submitted by dpaulat on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 16:58.I'm Amy Leigh Schutts, and I am a senior in Professional Writing. I'm an RA at Meredith Hall, taking care of 60 girls. This takes up pretty much all my free time now! I have always been a crazy Purdue fan, and I can't wait for football season to start! I am interested in Children's Publishing, reading, writing, and traveling. I just spent the month of July living and studying in Paris. I work at Purdue University Press in editing. My dream job would be to work somewhere like Scholastic in editing with authors and illustrators. I chose this class because I feel it will benefit me most, going into publishing, as opposed to business writing or tech writing. I don't know much about design, and I think this course will teach me the most about it of the other PW classes. I'm in a Tutoring Business writing class this semester, so I am going to be sick of writing memos and resumes! This class just seems different from any other PW class I've taken.
Which project will we be working in groups for?
Submitted by Kandiezfyre on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:03.My name is Jason Ortiz and I am from the Indianapolis area. I am a junior computer science major with a double minor of Spanish and German. I enjoy soccer and football and I have been a dedicated Colts fan my entire life. I played soccer through high school and still play recreationally when I have time.
Submitted by jdortiz on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 16:59.As far as my expectations for this class are concerned, I really do not have many. I have never taken an English class at Purdue so I do not know what to expect. However, I do expect to acquire some new skills in presenting information to others. I decided to enroll in this specific class because it seemed that I would find it more interesting and engaging than a business or technical writing class.
Will this class be using WebCt for grades or any other information or will the class website be our source?
I am from Bloomington, Illinois. My main interests are hanging out with friends, relaxing, sleeping, and occasionally gaming at the Nintendo Wii. I expect this class to be the introduction of the modern method of portraying information to the general public and/or possible clients and employers. I took this class because it seems like the most interesting "Advanced Composition" course. I certainly cannot say I am an ecstatic english buff, and this class seems slightly more entertaining and fun than writing extensive papers constantly. Why is attendance so necessary in a course that is taught through a web site anyways?
Submitted by rsethi on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:00.I'm a junior in CGT focusing in graphic/web design. My hometown is Valparaiso, Indiana. I love traveling and photography, which go together rather nicely.
I don't have many expectations of this course, but from friends that have taken it in the past, I've heard it's interesting and worthwhile. I hope that this class uses more creativity than the Tech Writing or Business Writing courses, and that's the main reason why I chose it.
What's your background (school, major, etc.)?
Submitted by udothehokeypokey on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:05.1) I'm from Chicago. I grew up not far from Wrigley Field. I am a senior in the Mathematics Education program at Purdue. I am minoring in both Psychology and Music. My hobbies/interests include: guitar playing, songwriting, listening to excellent music, and the Chicago Cubs among many other things. I am also Vice President of the Math Education club here on campus and play in a band called "Illegitimate Hat" with my roommates and a few of my coworkers.
2) I expect to learn more about writing in the multimedia setting. I feel that especially in the writing of online blogs that it is a completely different kind of writing than your standard college level writing. In many ways I feel that this type of writing is more important for communication purposes. I expect in the near future an even greater shift to online communication. I would like to be able to come across professionally in my online interactions via web postings. I enrolled in this class because I feel that this would be the most useful to my particular writing in the future. I don't know anything in particular about business writing classes however this is a class that fulfills a requirement for my major while still being somewhat applicable. If I can write more efficiently in the multimedia context then I believe it will help my teaching.
3) What are your hobbies/interests?
Submitted by dan_bortnick on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:04.my name is ramsey. i am majoring in computer science, one of my interests is art. I expect this class to have a comfortable environment where ideas can be exchanged freely between peers and the instructor. So far these expectations have been met, the course seems to be based on alot of group projects. I enrolled in this class because i enjoy working with computers and that is what i see myself working with in the future. What can we expect to be reading for our reading assignments? (articles, research papers, blog posts?)
Submitted by rsaba on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:01.My interests are bowling, reading, video games, web design, web development, graphic design, programming, and animation. My current sanctioned high game in bowling is 298 and by average is ~210. Majoring in Computer Graphics Technology w/ focus' in Animation and Web Development, and minoring in Computer and Information Technology.
This class is pretty much just like I expected it to be. As a CGT major it seemed like the more logical choice since it had more to do with technology and business writing seemed like it would be really boring.
What are you qualifications?
Submitted by merlin769 on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:01.1. Adam Strantz, senior in professional writing with a minor in computer & information technology.
Interests: Web design, photoshop, web 2.0, fiction, art, life, the universe, etc.
2. I was hoping to see a class that utilizes both the web and computer technology with the writing and rhetoric of PW. I'm liking it so far. I already had 421, the tech writing course that dealt heavily with business writing aspects such as grant-writing, but also usability and design analysis. I figured 419 would be a similarly mixed experience that would help me work on a lot of areas.
3. Will there be opportunities within the course to develop more on the digital technology and design side of things?
Submitted by Adam on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:01.My name is Julie Jansen -- I'm a senior majoring in English and Professional Writing. I also have minors in French, Anthropology, and Creative Writing. I'm from Greenwood, Indiana, located just south of Indianapolis. I enjoy reading, writing, singing, and dancing. I'm also somewhat passionate about grammar... weird, I know.
Since I hope to go into publishing, it seems appropriate (and necessary) that I familiarize myself with visual rhetoric, etc. I look forward to this class because I expect to be able to put the theories into practice... and from the sound of it, the class will allow me to do just that.
My question to you: Where did you go for your undergrad, etc.?
Submitted by jajansen on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:01.I am a 3rd year Computer Science major. My interests are computers, video games, and music. I currently work for ITAP as a .NET developer.
I decided to enroll in this class to learn more about writing and designing various multimedia presentations. I didn't enroll in this class expecting anything specific, it just seemed to be one of the more interesting English classes compared to technical or business writing.
What can we expect a typical class period to consist of?

Submitted by Mrmann on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:03.I'm Erica Jones and I love to write, eat cheese and crackers, and sing in my car. I'm currently studying advertising and public relations and I'm finishing up and English minor. I have an added interest in Brand Communication which made this class seem appealing (not to mention, applicable to everything else I'm studying.) I'm excited to learn the aspects of this medium, as it pertains to my major very closely. My knowledge of the subject is limited and as a result, I expect to work a great deal in order to do well.
Where are you from? And where did you receive your degree?
Submitted by edjones on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:03.My name is Jose M. Salazar. I am a junior in the College of Technology. My major is Computer Graphics Technology. I like listening to a variety of music.
I expect to learn the principles of multimedia writings. So far from what I've read of the course description it sounds like it will teach me what I want to learn. The reason I enrolled in this class is that since I am aiming in going into multimedia with my major, I might as well take and learn what Purdue has to offer me.
Question: Why do you decide to teach this course?
Submitted by ngc6853s on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:03.1. I am a junior in CGT with a concentration in computer architecture. Some of my interests are I love to paint and travel. I actually got to study aboard this summer in Italy and managed to also go to Switzerland.
2. I expected it to have more to do with technology then writing tons of papers. What I expected also came from what my friends told me about it from the semester before. I enrolled in this class primarily because I am not a fan of writing 20 page papers and as for my job to be this class seems to be more useful.
3. What would you say is the hardest part of this course?
Submitted by julie4646 on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 17:11.1. My name is Brian Williams and I'm a senior majoring in Computer Graphics Technology. I enjoy playing golf, poker, and billiards, and I am currently working for ITaP as a student intern. I am from Granger, Indiana originally.
2. I enrolled in this class because it seemed like it would be more relevant than business writing because of the fact that I am in a multimedia field of study. I am hoping to develop a portfolio website of my work if there is a project that would allow something like that. I think this class will allow me as a web developer to use my skills better than another type of writing class.
3. I was wondering if you have ever worked out in the field, and if so, what did you do? Were you more of an English person or a multimedia person?
