To complete this exercise, review the following student-made instruction sets linked below. Select the three instruction sets that you feel are the most effective and post their names in a comment below. In the same comment, explain how you decided upon the three instruction sets that you selected using concepts from The Thomson Handbook, Technical Communication Today, and/or the Instructor Blogs.

3 Best Designs

1. How to Throw a Hook with a Bowling Ball - Pictures with every step. Also, very easy on the eyes which is important with digital works. Not much wasted space.

2. How to Tune Your Guitar - The font and format seem like they would appeal to guitarists. Also pictures with every step. Not much wasted space.

3. Creme Brulee Made Easy - Very friendly and informative layout with many easy to see pictures. The instructions just flow. Not much wasted space.

The three instructions that I

The three instructions that I found most effective were:
Creme Brulee Made Easy
Remington Model 870 Disassembly
Preparing a Fillet

I found that these instructions offered descirptive images to accompany the text. They were all broken up in a fairly sequential order and organized well on the page. The reader is able to locate the information they need easily from step to step, which makes these instructions very effective.

Most Effective Student Instruction Sets

*Google Docs Instruction Manual
*How to Tune Your Guitar
*Creme Brulee Made Easy

These three instruction sets were all visually appealing to the reader. They all utilized white space in an effective way, and if they had photos, the alignment was formatted correctly. The Google Docs Instruction Manual was effective because it had a table of contents, and seemed very organized, like an instruction manual should be. How to Tune Your Guitar made good use of graphics, colors, and fonts without it being too "busy" or overwhelming. The diagrams in this instruction set were also particularly effective because they were labeled clearly. Creme Brulee Made Easy utilized pictures effectively to show the steps in making the dessert. Also, the instructions were simple and to the point, and it listed the ingredients and cooking materials right at the beginning.

9/2 Activity

I found the how to tune your guitar, creme brulee made easy and how to throw a hook with a bowling ball instruction sets to be the most effective. I felt like some of the others like the Microsoft Outlook 2007 E-mail setup instructions to be too cluttered with images. The 3 I chose have enough white space and have a good ratio of text to graphical usage.

Student Instructions

The three best I found were "How to Hook A Bowling Ball," "How to Tune a Guitar," and "Preparing a Filet."

The three instructions had a solid balance between proximity and white space. The pictures were very helpful as far as getting the concept across. The repitition was especially well done in "How to Tune a Guitar." The instant appeal of the three as far as their design goes was easily noted. The color and font choices were on point and were appealling to the eye. The directions were in a proper order and were easy to grasp. Very good examples of successful instructions and very good guidelines for the project to come.

The three instruction sets that I thought were the most effective were:How to change a bike tire, Creme Brulee made easy, and How to tune your guitar.
All of these instructions had step by step pictures for the reader, which is extremely helpful for completing each one of these activities. If a reader were to get lost reading the instructions they could refer to the pictures and catch up. The three sets also let their design persuade their readers, especially "How to tune your guitar." They all had colorful pictures, labels, and numbers to help the reader feel more at ease while trying to accomplish their goal. Each one of the instruction designs, to me, followed along with the instructor's blog on the different qualities of design.

Best Instruction Sets

Having not had enough time to read all the instruction sets, I based my decision on their design. Did instructions have clear, properly fonted captions? Were pictures clear and useful? Did the author make constructive use of white space (thereby making his instruction set seem like it was easy by emptying the page of anything trivial)? 1: Google Docs; 2) Creme Brulee 3) Changing Bike Tire

"How to tune your

"How to tune your guitar"
-This set of instructions is effective because the bolded font, illustrations, and color scheme catch your attention first. Also, there are labels on all the pictures to make sure that noone gets confused.

"Creme Brulee Made Easy"
-The instructions start out letting you know what you need. There is not very much white space and the illustrations are in excellent proximity with the texts to make it easy to follow.

"Remington Model 870 Disassembly"
-The safety warning catches your attention first because the contrast from the black text to the bright yellow caution draws your eyes directly towards that. Also, the illustrations have labels to make sure the reader understands what the text is talking about.

3 Best Instruction Sets

The three instruction sets I found to be the best were: Peparing a Fillet, How to Format Flash/Hard Drive, and Microsoft Outlook 2007 E-mail Setup. The main reason I found all three of these instruction sets to be so well done was the presentaion and design layout. The steps were easy to percieve, and all three included graphics to assist the reader along the way. Screenshots and photography really help. Also, none of them were cluttered or scrunched, as some of the others were. This allowed easy browsing of pdf file and a quicker, more concise read overall. Adding to their strengths even further was the fact that all of the steps made sense. There were no ambiguous steps and everything was accurate.

"Google Docs Instruction

"Google Docs Instruction Manual"
"How to Tune Your Guitar"
"Creme Brulee Made Easy"

These 3 were the most effective instructions listed. They used a format that complemented their subject, and included helpful illustration; the first one using screen-shots, since it is talking about Google Docs, and the last two providing photographs of the author during the actual progress.

Three most effective intruction sets.

The three instruction sets that I feel proved to be most effective were How to Tune Your Guitar, Remington Model 870 Disassembly, and Preparing a Filet. The first thing that stuck out about these instruction sets to me was the appeal of the design, and the ease at which I could read through them. Although I didn't have time to thoroughly read through the content, the alignment of the visuals were all on point, especially with the Remington Model 870 Disassembly pictures. The use of white space also had an impact on my judgement of effectiveness.

9/2 Activity

The three instructional sets that I felt were clear, concise, and effective were:

Creme Brulee Made Easy
Changing a Bike Tire
Preparing a Fillet

Creme Brulee made Easy had 15 steps that gave you a detailed play-byplay; which is neccessary if you have never made the dessert.

Changing a bike tire had extremly detailed pictures with guide arrows and cirlces. The instructions were also very clear.

preparing a Fillet was long and somewhat complex but had an easy-going dialouge that one could follow easily. It also gave extra directions on how to make an easy sauce for your steak.

In class Activity

*Creme Brulee Made Easy
This one was effective because it shows an image of each step as you go, includes a list of ingredients and kitchen utensils you will need, tells about precautions, is in sequence and easy to follow. The instructions arent too wordy, just simple and to the point. It makes it seem like everyone can make it. The title is also appropriate for the project.

*How to format flash/hard drive
I thought this was effective because it also shows an image of every step your computer will ask you to do. It seems like it would be easy to follow. There is enough writing to get the point across but it isnt overly wordy.

*Microsoft Outlook 2007 Email Setup
This one also had an image of every step your computer will ask you to follow, making it easy to understand. There are notes at the bottom in case there is a problem.

Instruction Sets

The three instruction sets that I found to be effective out of ten were as follows:

-How to Tune Your Guitar: The table of contents was helpful because if you wanted to skip ahead of the intro and dive into the tuning you knew what page to turn to. The table of contents lead the reader to what they were looking for. The detailed photographs with labeled and numbered parts were extremely helpful and easy to follow.

-Creme Brulee Made Easy: The pictures enhanced the detailed step by step instructions. Giving the warning lable for the torch was a appropriate.By adding the feedback of placing the creme brulee in the oven to broil instead of torch was a smart idea because most readers wouldn't have a torch.

-Chaging a Bike Tire: The setup of the instuctions was aesthitically pleasing, the choice of a blue undertone established a calming feeling for a task that could cause some stress. The photos with labeled parts were well done and helpful.

Top 3

Creme Brulee, How to tune a guitar, and google docs are the three best instructions. All three include helpful visuals that guide the reader through the instructions process. The visuals give the reader assurance that he or she is carrying out the instructions correctly. Strong visuals are key to effective instructions, and these three use visuals very well.

Three Instructions

I liked the instructions on tuning a guitar, making creme brulee, and taking apart the gun. All three had pictures that were taken of someone performing each step. They were layed out in a easy to read manner and I didnt have to look around the page to find the next step. Some of the other instruction sets were confusing and seemed unprofessional. The ebay instructions were entirely blank on the left for no appearant reason. I'm confident I could do the three tasks given in the three instruction sets I chose, even with no prior knowledge of the topic.

9/2 Activity

I found the following three instruction sets to be most helpful -

1. Google Docs Instruction Manual
2. How to Tune Your Guitar
3. How to Format Flash/Hard Drive

The reasons I found these particular helpful are basically the same as for my 4th reading response. I really appreciate the effective use of visuals in instructions, nothing helps state a point more than picture demonstrating the exact point. All three sets also contained information that added more than just a general description. All three sets seemed to truly want to help you learn, which I believe is vital.
