Proposal

The Service Learning Project is designed to create posters to be displayed in the English Department at UNC-Wilmington. Clients, better known as students, will view the posters which will each cater to different careers that can successfully be held with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. The overall theme prevailing over the poster material is that a variety of careers can be obtained by graduating with an English degree. Our team's main goal will be to display this theme, and how the knowledge you obtain as an English major can help you with a variety of different careers. Being able to communicate and write well are tools that are extremely beneficial in a career environment, and they are job qualifications that not every graduate has. However, English majors do possess these skills. Being able to communicate in a professional manner is something that be useful in a business environment. The team's efforts are to educate potential English majors, as well as bring awareness to all undergraduate students on the need for English majors. Also, the team's goal is to reinforce current student's decisions who are already in the College of Arts and Sciences. From a public school principal to a civil litigation attorney, English is a major that can lead to a successful career comparable to any other undergraduate degree. The difference that the poster material is designed to display is that the success lies all in the decisions, creativity, and dedication of the the graduate. We decided to pick out three alumni because they represent a very diverse array of successful graduates with an English major. We wanted to express the idea that although you many not know exactly what career option you are going to take, the tools learned in the English department at UNCW will be beneficial and useful. The students who are viewing our projects will probably be English majors, some of whom are graduating soon. They might be somewhat nervous about graduating and their career options that they can follow with their major. Our posters are designed to show students that they are learning essential tools to follow any career path. English is a broad department and we want to show students that there are many different paths they can take with an English degree. (It should be known that one of our interviewees did not respond promptly, and we have left out that specific poster).

Please make comments about the following:
-Visual appeal
-Spelling
-Content
-Proposal report
-Overall effectiveness

JBB Group Evaluation

This poster looks very nice. The photo of Ms. Winstead looks a little too narrow. Make sure that you keep the same proportions when you adjust the size of a photo.

Also, in the second to last paragraph the word English is not capitalized. That is a very important thing for the English Department!

I would lower the last quote or use different line breaks because the text gets lost in the legs of the pier.

You might try experimenting with contrasting text size so the document doesn't look flat. Dramatic contrast adds interest and helps the eye move around the page.

Gena:
visual- awesome
spelling- no errors
content- simple, to the point, not a lot of bs. good to give audience simple, quick information to keep their attention
proposal report- well done, we understand what the project entails.
overall effectiveness- shows the broad spectrum of careers that an english major could pursue.

Linda:
visual-awesome
spelling- no errors
content- might have wanted to use a more recent graduate, feels out-of-date. however, the message that you can rise up in a certain field is apparent.
effectiveness- same as content, but visually it works

JBB Group Evaluation part 2

For Linda's poster, you should get rid of the comma after "clear and concise teacher evaluations" because the next phrase is not a complete sentence.

I would also lower the final quote so that it is completely in the sand. The waves distract from the text.

Gena

1) The poster is visually appealing. I like the teal color scheme and beach picture.
2) Be consistent with periods (whether you do or don't use them) in the bulleted section. Separate is spelled incorrectly. “English” needs to be capitalized (line 4).
3) The content is good; it is brief but informative. I like the use of a quote from the alum.
4) Proofread your proposal report; there were several grammatical mistakes (incorrectly placed commas, etc.). Also, avoid use of personal pronouns ("you" was used several times).
5) Overall, the poster seems effective in efforts to prompt students towards an English major.

Linda

1) The poster is visually appealing. However, the picture of Linda is quite fuzzy- do something to make it sharper.
2) The spelling seems good. However, the comma in the last line ("…, and to communicate...") shouldn’t be there.
3)The content is good- it's brief and informative.
4) Proposal report: see above comment
5) Overall effectiveness: good

The visual appeal of Gena's

The visual appeal of Gena's poster was excellent. I really liked how you showed the beach and used UNCW's colors. The spelling looks good, I found no clear errors. The content of Gena's poster was good. Her quote was useful because it was good advice and her background information was very well written. The overall effectiveness of Gena's was great.

The visual appeal of Linda's was also good. I liked how you used the same background for both posters because, it gives them a good sense of unity. The spelling was good as far as I saw. The content was good and it showed a very different career path than Gena's. The overall effectiveness of this poster was good, it was very informative.

The only thing I would change about the proposal report is to break it up more. Separate it into smaller paragraphs.
