Purpose
The purpose of these instructions is to provide people with simple steps that can be taken to save money around the house. I want the reader to feel like these steps will save enough money to make doing them worth while.
Audience
This audience is consists of money conscious homeowners who may need some help thinking of easy ways to save money in their home. They don’t need to have a lot of money or free time, as the tasks being performed are easy, everyday encounters that require no professional help. Homeowners and renters alike should be able to do most of the tasks that will be mentioned. They audience has to pay their own utility bills, which will be the area where most money can be saved.
Context
The instructions are not necessarily step-by-step processes, so they can be done anytime the reader gets a chance. Since the instructions are on saving money at home, they will be done almost entirely at home. Some steps may require some shopping and finding products in stores.
Strategies
My strategy is to keep the changes simple. I don’t want to intimidate the reader with costs or levels of difficulty. I will further encourage the reader by informing them of any positive environmental impacts the changes could provide. Statistics on relevant savings will be given i.e. power saved in a year by switching to energy efficient light bulbs. Dollar amounts will be added up to give a final, more impressive total possible savings.
Medium
Since the purpose of these instructions is to save money, they should be presented in an easily accessible medium. Most everyone has access to the internet, making it a likely starting point for an audience member.
Arrangement
The instructions do not have to be done in any specific order. I will divide each step into sections and provide sufficient information on how to do each step and how much money the reader can expect to save. Most of the savings will be recurring and can be summed up over longer lengths of time. Helpful graphs and quantity comparisons will be given to further emphasize the value of each step.
Testing
I can test my instructions by giving them to friends and relatives who own or rent homes or apartments and who would be interested in saving money. Everyone who reads the instructions should feel like they could easily do something on the list that would be worth their while in the long run.
Classmate Comments
The context and strategies are very well described here. The context is fairly cut and dry, but he doesn't make the mistake of assuming that people will know the context of these instructions will be their homes and he mentions that this is where the action will be taken. The strategies to motivate readers (i.e. telling the environmental benefits) are an excellent idea. The audience is a little unclear though, I don't quite see who the two groups are or if there are more than two. This connects with my instructions because both are trying to communicate some form of home improvement. This seems like a very sound idea for a set of instructions for college kids or a young teacher as we are certainly groups who don't have endless funds, but if this was presented to a more wealthy group of people you might want to focus more on the environmental aspect as opposed to the saving money aspect.

Audience is the most thorough element. You explain exactly who will be in need of your instructions.
Purpose is the weakest. Try to define what exactly you are doing and why you are doing it.
We both are using the internet as our medium because it can reach a broader audience.
If you designed it for college students and for older people it would be different. The way a college kids saves money is different from the way an adult saves money
