Purpose: My purpose for these instructions is to inform people how to upload video from their camera, edit it on imovie, and upload the final product onto Youtube. My intention is for the audience to feel comfortable enough to successfully use imovie after reading my directions. I plan on using clear and concise directions on how to use and navigate through the imovie program. There are not established instructions for imovie that are readily available for users. I want to provide the best and most accurate instructions on the market.
Audience: Characteristics of my audience: Have a mac. Have imovie 08. Have a desire to edit video. Want to publish video onto Youtube. Have a desire to learn more about how imovie works. My audience will be sitting down at a computer, and could potentially become very frustrated, as my people do, with insufficient directions. It it my job to cater to my audience and provide them with helpful instructions that don't get them upset.
Context: The communication will take place when a person has taken video via his or her camera, and is ready to edit the footage on imovie. exactly when I give the information is not important, because people will want to edit video during all times of the year. The communication will take place on the computer screen. I will make web based instructions that can easily be viewed while using imovie.
Strategies: Visuals will be my main and most effective strategy. With virtually every step I will include a visual of what that looks like on the imovie screen. This will keep the reader focused and give him or her a better understanding of the instructions. I will also use simple language, as to not confuse the reader. I am writing both instruction sets for beginner imovie users so it will not include technical jargon. The instructions will also look neat and professional.
Medium: I will be using the internet as my medium for this assignment. The internet is the most effective medium because the audience can move back and forth between the instructions and the imovie screen. This is the most effective medium as well because it can reach the broadest audience. More people will be able to access it, as compared to written instructions.
Arrangement: My instructions will be arranged step by step to go through the imovie and Youtube upload process. Almost every step will include a picture of the imovie/youtube screen to guide the reader as they carry out the instructions. I will do my best to present instructions that flow the way a person would use imovie, and not include steps that are out of order, or steps that they don't need.
Testing: The best way to test my instructions would be to give someone who hasn't used imovie a camera with video on it, and let them read and follow out the instructions. Since my target audience is beginners, I want to make sure the person testing is unfamiliar with imovie as well.
Looks good overall
I liked the strategy of using images of what the reader will be looking at when they are going through the steps. As someone who has never used imovie,I can see how that would be very helpful. If I were following those instructions I would definately need some pictures.
Testing might be the least thoroughly covered element. I think its just because I'm so unfamiliar with the program but I'm a little confused on what kind of video you would be giving them and what their objective would be.
It doesnt connect to what I'm doing a too much. One of my instruction sets could be done as a website also.
If it were done for more advanced users, you could include more technical terms and maybe leave out the basics and include more in depth techniques.
Instruction set responses
* Medium was covered throughly. I found it interesting that you will be using the internet as the medium for the instruction set, to me this was a neat idea because your audience are more than likely heavy internet users if they are looking to post videos on Youtube.
*Even though you seem to have a grasp of the level of experience a user of your instruction set would have with video editing, maybe focus the audience so it isn't so broad. For example, tailoring your instruction set for a teenager or elderly person to use.
*This instruction set connects with mine because we both seem to have thought through our choices for a medium and chosen a medium that would showcase our instructions.
* If you focused your audience to a group of elderly people you could come up with a written form of instructions, almost in a brochure type of format. Design them in the mindset that they could be placed in areas in the community that experience high traffic of the elderly.
