Personal Intro

1. Hey my name is Samuel Harrison, but I've always gone by my middle name, Tyler. I'm 20 years old but I turn 21 next month. I enjoy playing poker and I watch UFC on spike often.
2. I expect that I will learn about the professional writing that takes place in the workplace today. Hopefully by the end of the semester my work will be good enough for a real life work environment. I enrolled in this class because I'm majoring in English.
3. So Professor Tirrell I noticed that the icon on this webpage looks like one of the venture brothers... Do you like that show? I think Brock is what makes that show great.

Personal Introduction

1. Hello everyone, my name is Louis Edwards! I am 21 years old as of April 26th, and I have enjoying myself quite a bit since then. I enjoy writing, playing music, meeting new people, going out, and watching college football. Maybe my beloved Heels will live up to their expectations this year.

2. From this class, I hope to gain more knowledge about professional writing and the techniques most commonly practiced in the real world today. I expect to begin building my writing portfolio this semester, and hopefully I will be able to use work from this class. My minor is journalism, which inspired me to enroll in this course.

3. This may be a random question, but to the instructor, what kind of music do you listen to?

personal intro

1. My name is Melanie Weast and I am a sophomore from Durham, NC. I am currently going to major in Communications and hopefully minor in english. I love to watch men's college basketball.

2. I chose this class because I have always thought about writing a book. I used to be the editor of my high school newspaper and I thought that writing professionally for a magazine or newspaper would be a fun job.

3. Is this class extremely time consuming?

Personal Intro

1. My name is Russell Liston, but like many other members of my family, I go by my middle name, Seth. I am a Junior from Raleigh, NC. I am majoring in Politcal Science and minoring in Journalism. I was a UNCW swimmer for 2 years until my left shoulder dislocated for the 11th or 12th time. I love social settings and meeting new people.

2. As far as this class goes, I am curious to see if it will play out as expected. I enjoy reading and writing but I need to hone my ability. I tend to ramble or lose focus of my thesis in the articles I write, so I am hoping that this course will allow me to see the steps it takes to write professionally.

3. Will this course allow me to take my thoughts and condense them into a professionally exceptable format, or shall I simply expand my concpet of what I think is professional writing and continue on some rambling path into oblivion?

Personal Introduction

Hey Everyone! My name is Melanie Rose Clark. I'm a senior, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Journalism. I'm from Long Island, New York. My favorite thing to do is travel, I love going new places and meeting all different types of people.

I took this class because I know very little about professional writing and I thought it would be extremely helpful to learn about. I also wanted to work on building a writing portfolio and I thought this class would be helpful for that! This class also counts for my journalism minor which is why I enrolled in the course.

For Professor Tirrell, what made you decide to come teach at Wilmington?

Alan Spears

1. My name is Alan Spears. I am a Junior pursuing a English major and Leadership Minor. I was born and raised in NC. I work at Bonefish Grill, so if you’re hungry or like seafood come see me.

2. My English major has a concentration in professional writing. As far as this class goes I would like to know where this work can take me. I would like to have an idea of what doors this degree opens.

3. I would like to know what is the most appealing aspect of Professional Writing?

Introduction

My name is Brianna Elliott, and I'm a sophomore majoring in marine biology and film with a minor in journalism. I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD so am quite content to be moving to this warmer part of the East Coast. My main interests include photography, kayaking, anything outside, and sea turtles. I plan to do documentaries/environmental journalism relating to turtles after college.

I expect to learn how to address varying types of businesses and audiences, which will help make my writings and films applicable to many. I enrolled in this class primarily because it is required for the journalism minor, but additionally because I love to write.

My question for this course would be what is the Corporate Project about? Will we be actually addressing large businesses, or will we be doing this in a mock setting?

Personal Introduction

1. My name is Maegan Bendt. I am Junior Communication Studies major with a minor in Journalism. I love watching television and movies in my spare time. When I graduate I plan on pursuing a career in Broadcast Journalism, and hopefully land on a morning talk show.

2. I enrolled in the class because it is one of the core classes for the Journalism minor. I hope to enhance my concept of professional writing by learning different aspects and hard skills. That in turn will help me to succeed in the workplace.

3. What is the most important thing your students should take away from your course?

Intro

My name is Austin Vandegrift. I am 21 years old and from Southern New Jersey. I am a senior this year and majoring in environmental science and environmental engineering. Next semester I will be transfering to NC State to finish my engineering degree. My interests are fishing, hunting, and surfing.

I expect to better my writing skills in this class and prepare myself to write in a professional settings. This course was very appealing to me because I have not taken many writing courses and would like to improve my writing skills. Also, it was recommended by my advisor which is the primary reason I am taking the course.

One question I have for the instructor is what brought you to Wilmington?

Personal Intro

1. My name is Jim Dallke and I am junior at UNCW. I am majoring in communication studies and minoring in journalism. I have a passion for writing and I am a huge sports fan, so it would make sense that my dream job would be a sports journalist. I currently write for the Seahawk newspaper, the Cape Fear Sports Report, and occasionally for PrepStar's recruiting handbook.
2. While taking this class I want to improve my writing, learn what it takes to become a professional writer, and add some new clips to my resume. The journalism field, and sports journalism especially, is very competitive and there are only a select number of jobs for college graduates. I want to do everything I can to gain a leg up on the competition and show potential employers I am the most qualified for the job.
3. Will there be any opportunities for extra credit in this class?

Personal Introduction

I'm Alan Searcy. I'm from a small town (small enough I mention the county name instead {Polk} ) near Asheville, N.C., but I have moved around consistently my whole life; Denver, Colorado; Wichita, Kansas; and Memphis, Tennessee, to name a few cities of residency. If the people most close to me had to determine one word that perfectly described me, it would probably be "music". In fact, my friends come straight to me with any questions about bands, songs, albums, etc., because for some reason, the only easily-referenced knowledge (names, dates...) I retain is music related. Coincidentally, I can't play a single instrument well.

Although I took this class because it is required, I did add the minor that requires it (journalism) , so I do want to be here! It would be useful to learn the routine and etiquette of writing on a more professional level; that's a necessity toward my transition from writing casually, similar to how I speak, to writing in an easily understandable format. Learning how to write in an realistic hands-on situation will be exiting too.

Ok, my question is: Noting your educational background, how important do you think it is to have education experience in website writing code and web design as far as opening doors for the future go?

Personal note

1. Hi everyone, I'm Claire LaSure, a junior from Raleigh, North Carolina. I'm an English major, journalism minor. Writing is my passion and thankfully what I'm good at when I work past procrastination. My goal is to join the Peace Corps or volunteer teaching disadvantaged children overseas after I graduate, then we'll see where the rest goes. I love riding horses and scuba diving.
2. I took this class because it's one of the basic major requirements for professional writing, but expected something totally different from what I encoutered yesterday. I am really excited about the business aspect of this class and hope to gather good skills to help me deal with whatever professional crises I may deal with in the future. I am also excited about getting the chance to work with an actual client with real expectations, and hope that the set deadlines will help me strive to cure my habit of procastinating. Because the type of writing this class requires will involve word limits, I feel that it will also help me be more concise with my words.
3. Two questions, two serious and one not: 1. How time consuming is this class ,and, 2. about how much time will groups need to plan for working outside of class? 3. Mr. Tirrell: What were your top three favorite bands in college?

Personal Introduction

1. Hey, my name is Ryan Sarfan. I am a sophomore here at UNCW, but am originally from Newport News, Va. Film and writing are my two main interests academically, but outside of school I love to play guitar, surf, skimboard, skateboard, and film things. Of all my interests though, guitar and music theory are my favorite.
2. I expect to improve my non-fiction writing skills in this class. I have taken short fiction creative writing classes last year and also am this semester, so hopefully this will help me broaden my writing abilities. Film making has led me to want to improve my writing skills so I can hopefully one day write and direct, and of course for the professional writing concentration this class is required. And also hopefully very interesting.
3. What type of work do you do aside from teaching? Do you currently write for any publications or do freelance work?
-Ryan Sarfan

Personal Introduction

Hi everyone! I'm Mari McWhite (it's spelled Mari, but pronounced like "Mary"). I enjoy shopping, going to the beach, reading, and playing with my dog Oliver. From this class, I expect to become more technologically savvy, as well as getting good experience with group work, as I have not really done much group work in any of my previous classes here at UNC-W. I enrolled in this class because I am an English major with a concentration in Professional Writing. So, this class was obviously required for my major, but it seems like it will be very informative also! My question about this course is: what type of writing exercises will we be doing in order to develop more professional vocabulary and style?

Personal Intro...

1. Hello, my name is Evan Hardy and I'm from the Asheville area of North Carolina. I've lived all over the United States, but Cullowhee, NC was most recently home for me. I should be a Junior, but due to some confusion in my transfer process I'm currently enrolled as a Sophomore. Will have to deal with that in the near future. I play guitar, literally four to five hours a day (mainly acoustic) and I do it to pass time. I'd consider myself a pretty good guitarist but nothing is more humbling, and exciting, than to sit down with out people playing guitars and learn new things.
2. I don't have many expectations for this class, to be honest. I understand it will involve writing, which I consider myself good at, but other than that, I truly don't expect much else. I hope the class is enjoyable, and I feel that we connect with Mr. Tirrell already, so thats good. The only thing that truly motivated me to join the class was the need as far as my major is concerned.
3. Will we have to have a decent understanding of technical jargon to do well in this class?

1. Hi my name is Jenny

1. Hi my name is Jenny Spivey. I am a junior here at UNCW and majoring in both English (Professional writing) and Communication studies. I am also minoring in journalism. I am a sports addict and since I am from Virginia-- I am a HUGE Hokie fan!
2. Hopefully this class will teach me how to be a more effective and persuasive writer. Throughout middle school, high school, and even college it has been mostly essays. I am definitely ready to learn something more related to the business and technology world.
3. What made you decide to come to UNCW?

Personal Intro

1. My name is Alex Moore. I'm 21 and I'm an Engineering major. I'm technically a senior but this is definately not my last year of school. I'm from Wilmington and I definately think I've been here too long.
2. I expect to learn ways to write different documents or reports or things of that nature that would be used in today's workplace.
3. So you like Eastbound and Down. If there is one thing you hate, is it losing? And if theres two things you hate, are they losing and cancer?

1. My name is Jazmyn Carter.

1. My name is Jazmyn Carter. I am originally from California, my family and I moved here about four years ago. The most important thing to know about me would be that I am insanely in love with Michael Jackson!!! He is by far the greatest man to have ever lived.. and yes his sudden death was a huge shocker to me. I am currently a Junior here at UNCW. I am a Communications major and my minor is journalism. My daily activites consist of school, work, sleeping(whenever possible) and eating.

2. I took this course because it was a requirement for my minor. I hope to someday have my own public relations company or, to be a sports agent, or write for a fashion magazine. I hope that this class enhances my writing skills for whichever future occupation I choose.

3. I know that there will be alot of group work in this course and I tend to be slightly insecure about ideas I may have. So my question to you Professor Tirrell would be how, how can this course boast my confidence and at the close of this course, will I have obtained the skills needed to be successful in my future career endeavors?

Introduction

1. Hello Professor Tirrell! My name is Lonnie Wyatt but you can call me by my middle name, Wallace. I am a senior here at UNCW, striving to receive my degree in Environmental Studies. Despite living in Wilmington, I really enjoy the comfort of mountains. If given the opportunity, would backpack every protected wilderness in the world. Besides that I like music, boardgames, and being at the beach.

2. I expect to learn the fundamentals of producing career-related documents such as memos, e-mails, resumes, presentations, and reports. I also expect to hone the skills required to communicate these documents. This course comes highly recommended by my academic advisor.

3. I heard rumors of website developement in this class, is this true?

Personal

Hi, I'm Aaryn and I added this class recently. I am a sophomore majoring in COM and double minoring in English and Spanish. I enjoy EVERYTHING about UNCW except going to class. I love the beach, the surrounding areas, my school, professors, and atmosphere. JUST NOT CLASS. During this class I hope to sharpen my writing skills as well as learn something new. English can often seem repetitive! I enrolled in this class because I need it for my minor and Intro to Journalism did not seem appealing. As of now I have NO question about this course.

Thanks,
Aaryn
