Drafts and Usability Tests

To complete the Drafts and Usability Tests component of this project, you must first create drafts of your two instruction sets. The drafts may be as complete as you wish, but keep in mind that the more finished they are, the more precise your feedback will be.

After you have drafts of your instruction sets, you will create a usability test for each of your instruction sets. Page 323 of Technical Communication Today provides a list of different usability tests, but the ones you may choose from for this project are:

  • Read and Locate Test
  • Summary Test
  • Protocols
  • Surveying
  • Interviewing

You may create the same kind of usability test for both instruction sets, or you may create different tests for each set.

You will bring two copies of each usability test to class on Monday (10/18): one for me and one for classmates. Your classmates will use your instruction set drafts to take your usability tests. However, it is important to keep in mind that your classmates may not be the actual audience for your instruction sets. As such, their feedback may or may not be completely helpful in revising your instruction sets. The crucial issue is to create usability tests that would be appropriate for your instruction sets' authentic audiences, whether or not that includes people like your classmates.
