Pitch, Package, Promote Project

Project Summary:

The Pitch, Package, Promote Project asks students to advance through three interrelated Professional/Technical writing tasks: pitching an original retail video game idea; producing corresponding packaging materials; creating appropriate promotional materials. Students will begin this project working individually but will eventually form into groups to complete it.

Pitch:
Individual
Each student will create a one-sheet video game design document and a corresponding one minute presentation. Students will make their pitches using these materials (students should provide an electronic copy of their one-sheet to the instructor). The class will vote on five pitches to develop.

Package:
Group
Each group will create three packaging materials for its corresponding video game:

Promote:
Group
Each group will create two promotional materials for its corresponding video game:

  • One magazine-format print advertisement
  • One 30-second audio or video advertisement

Project Sequence:

  1. Read about video game writing
  2. Create and share One-Sheets
  3. Select pitches to pursue
  4. Form groups and complete team building exercise
  5. Discuss practical and technical issues of creating materials
  6. Create and workshop packaging materials
  7. Create and workshop promotional materials
  8. Form packaging materials rubric and promotional materials rubric
  9. Produce final packaging materials and promotional materials
  10. Create Packaging Analyses and Promotion Analyses
  11. Complete reflective Postmortem about group work experience

Deliverables:

  1. One-Sheet (10% of project grade and possible bonus points, individual)
  2. Packaging and Promotional Materials (60% of project grade, group)

  3. Packaging Analysis (10% of project grade, group)
