Organization Report

Each student will create an oral report of between 5–10 minutes and a corresponding one-page handout that profiles an activist organization. Choice of organization is open (refer to the class's general notes about what constitutes an activist organization), although each organization may be profiled only once. Students are encouraged to select organizations with which they are unfamiliar or with whom they disagree.

Reports should address the following questions:

  • What is the organization’s purpose? What it is trying to accomplish? (This may be articulated in a mission statement.)
  • What issue does this organization address? What is the relevant contextual background information (including, if possible, how and why it was founded)?
  • What has this organization done? What notable actions has it taken?
  • What methods has this organization employed to enact change? How has it used writing?
  • Who if anyone can be identified with this organization? Is affiliation explicit or tacit, public or concealed?

Responses to these prompts should be based on research, and presenters should identify sources (reputable periodicals or, if possible, peer-reviewed scholarly journals) to help establish their information's legitimacy. Students are encouraged to present visual and/or documentary evidence (images, example texts, etc.) for their assertions. Handouts will be submitted electronically to the instructor as emailed attachments for distribution in the Notes section of this course website.
