Bush announced not very long ago that he intends to bring new life to NASA’s space program and put men back onto the Moon and maybe even Mars. Of course this will require a massive budget and also that NASA is currently messing with the International Space Station.

I was wondering if you think that this is a wise decision given the US’s current situation with Iraq and the economy.

Why destroy the moon as well?

It's true that we have accomplished alot in this world and in those accomplishments there are good things and bad things. Why have people on the moon? To make it an exact replica of the earth? Once it's inhabited with people then what? A fight over territory? Who knows we may even declare war against them because they have better resources there! Sure it would be huge accomplishment but then what? What is it that you really gain from this? I would say just leave it alone as it is and just let things go the way they are.

Move on

I think that at some point Bush has to move on and focus on other issues facing the U.S. besides the war in Iraq. He has to consider what is best for the THIS country and what would benifit its people. I do support of the ongoing war, however I do not think we have to be consumed by it. If it is in our economic means to see our country flourish then Bush has every right to finance NASA's space program.

Bush

I think you made a really good point about moving on a little bit. All of our energy as a country has been put into the war. It's great to see some effort put in at home. I'm not saying I disagree with the war, but it's great to see other issues discussed.
Don't get me wrong, the space program is very important. However, I think there are other important issues that our resources should go toward first. For example, poverty, social security, medical insurance, and education. These are pertinent things that affect the quality of people's lives every day. Until we can manage these issues at hand, we probably shouldn't worry too much about the space program. I personally feel that these things are more important.

Space Program Benefits

I think that we are missing the best point of space exploration if we just concentrate on the actual exploration. What I think is much more important is the technology that is developed to do such things. When the space program was first developed we gained a lot of new products that changed the world. Going to the moon, or Mars, is just a challenge to get people thinking. Without a constant challenge, science does not progress as well as it could.
The other point that I think we are missing, is President Bush's push for more science programs at schools. He believes that American culture is starting to fall behind the world in science, and a public program like this might be the way to get people interested.

why

Is there really any reason to drop billions of dollars into a space program to waste ten years on sending a Lander to Mars that crashes because of a very small calculation mistake? The money that is being wasted on this program should be spent trying to cure an epidemic that is affecting everyone on the Earth. Put that money into research for curing aids and providing medicine and health care to victims. Or how about we help feed and shelter the people within our own boarders who are out of jobs and are starving and freezing. Why can’t we help our own before we help every one else.

Space Program

I don't think it is necessary to spend all this money to go to the moon. I'm not really sure what the president hopes to gain from this mission. I think that there are more important things that this money should be used for. Space travel is so expensive, and the economy is not at its best. I personally don't think that space travel should be on the top of the to do list.

Quid Pro Quo

I think that if we can resolve our little war escalations all over the world then I think we can gear money towards other things. I think that furthering the space program is a good idea but I think that Bush is only going to be in office for a little while longer so I dont think he can really start anything to big unless he is assured the next president will carry it on.

Space

I think that going to the moon again and futher exploration of space and mars can proide great information. But with the current war in terriorism I don know know how much money we can spend on other projects. In the link it said they had 16 billion dollars to work with, true this is a lot of money but what if it isnt enough? Should we ask them to cut corners and make some thing cheaper. I think that with the current war on terriorism proceding with a space program would just be to much to handle at the current moment.

Space program

I'm not sure about this but there should be a good reason for spending money on space travel. The research could helpful although it might not be the right time to do it. If it really affects the current issues negatively, then I think it shouldn't be done.

No Problem

I don’t see a problem with this. We can’t just make assumptions that we can’t fund a space program because of our economy, the president has much more information than we do on the subject so we can’t really jump to conclusions and say that we can’t fund this.
Putting more emphasis on the space program could also help in a way to define a culture. If we get a man to Mars and everyone in their living room sees this it could start a new generation of children growing to appreciate science at a younger age. Not only that making NASA more mainstream will give America the reputation of the leader of the world in technology once again.

GOOD

I think it is a great idea to bring new life to NASA. The space program is very important to science and who knows what we can find out there. Also I was watching CNN and they were talking about how NASA says in the year 2020 we will have a research base on the moon and I’m all for that.

baby steps

i dont see any greatness in this decision. i dont know what we can gain from putting another man on the moon, at this point in time. i think that the war on terror is our main focus and until the last of our troops our out of there i dont think we should be going by leaps and bounds, but just be concerned about what we have in front of us.
