Omaha Schools Moving Back to Segregation

weekly discussions

The school system in Omaha is being reorganized into three districts that would be very segregated, one mostly white, one mostly black, and one mostly Hispanic. Many people are claiming that this is a move back to the days of segregation. However, advocates say that it would benefit minorities by giving them more control over their own districts instead of whites. What do you think?

Wow...

Wow, I knew racial issues weren't solved, but I would have never guessed that segregation would ever come back into play. I'm really surprised that people are allowing this to happen. I would hate to see history repeat itself and racism become a prodominent concern again. I agree that this may infringe on some student's rights. I hope someone smart will realize the problems that will result from this and do something about it.

Step Back

This is a huge step back for changing stereotyping and prejudice. The only way to reduce these things is for these groups to positively interact. It's ridiculous to segregate these groups. In the 1950's it was suppossed tp be positive to have seperate, but equal. This plan clearly didn't work out. I think this is just another excuse to segregrate races.

not sure

I believe that this proposition is both good and bad. I think that I would be in favor of the segregated schools. It seems that these children are being deprived of schooling in their area. The whole point of going to school is to get the best education possible right? It seems that all groups benefit, not one - so how does this become racism? If segregation of schools is better for the students than i believe that it should be allowed.

I thought racial problems

I thought racial problems were almost becoming extinct and such an issue crops up? Whatever they say to support this, people are still going to say that it's discrimination, and whoever said this is damn right about saying that they won't go down well in history!

confused

I guess I don't understand, it seems the districts are being drawnas the high schools are set up. If some of those neighborhoods that send students to the schools are high in minorities then that school will have more minorities. If it is splitting up within a district and only allows whites blacks and hispanics then i would understand. But maybe I misunderstood it and if i did then yes it would be horrible.

Segregation

I think that is so sad. There is no reason for the schools to be segregated like that. It is just an excuse to separate the races by saying that it will give minorities more control over their school systems. I would not support this movement if I had children in the school system.

no deal

i don't think that anyone could look past the negatives of this idea to reconize the positives, if any. I don't know where this idea is trying to solve but they need to go back to the drawing board

school

I’m not sure this is the right thing to do. I think this will bring more problems than benefits. The minorities might gain more control over their districts, but will this solve racial conflicts? I think it would be a better idea to allow more minorities into high schools where the students are mostly white.
