Stork Craft Manufacturing, Inc. Drop-Side Crib Recall

DATE: May 4, 2009

TO: Employees of Stork Craft Manufacturing, Inc.

FROM: Jim Moore, President and CEO

SUBJECT:Mass recall of drop-side cribs manufactured by our company

In concurrence with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), our company has agreed to a recall of our drop-side cribs activated by the one-handed plastic trigger. These recall includes the 147,000 cribs manufactured by our company that bare the Fisher-Price logo.

It has been reported in many instances that the drop-side wall of the crib detaches accidentally, resulting in approximately 67 reported injuries and four fatalities. As a result of the research we have conducted to determine the issue of this accidental detachment, we have narrowed it down to the faulty hardware and construction of this specific style of crib.

We have offered our customers a temporary alternative for their convenience. On our company’s website, there is an option available for affected parents to order a free repair kit to convert the drop-side wall of the crib to a fixed wall. Parents have been advised to find other sleeping arrangements for their child until they have converted their cribs from drop-side to fixed wall cribs, or until they have purchased a new crib. We must send out these repair kits as soon as possible after they have been ordered to avoid inconveniencing our customers.

According to a spokesperson for Toys ‘R’ Us, one of our many retailers, they are going to cease ordering any style of drop-side crib in the future of their company. This means that despite the safety record of our drop-side cribs built with a metal rod versus plastic, this style of crib might soon be out of demand. Our company needs to reconsider the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs in the future, as retailers may no longer order them in light of this mass recall. In the event of the potential banning of all drop-side cribs, we must be prepared with a new and alternative style of crib to offer our customers and retailers. Our customers rely on us to provide them with cribs that are not only safe but also affordable, which must be considered in the event of the manufacture of a new style of crib provided by Stork Craft Manufacturing, Inc.

It is vital to the success of our company and more importantly, to our customers, that we provide safe and efficient cribs in the future. We must rebuild trust with our customers and retailers and prove to them that the safety of their children is of the utmost important to us and they will never again find themselves in this situation.

Memo

The memo's format is correct. It is broken down into different parts. The format is professional and effective. The header and message are extremely effective.
2. The subject is stated and that is that they have decided to recall their cribs becasue they are not up to par with manfacturing regulations. The purpose is to state what is happening and what the compnay is doing to fix the situation. Main point is stop children from getting hurt because of the faulty models. There is no background information on the product. The importance of the subject is that they wont childrent to stop getting hurt.
3. It is divided into several topics, regulations, temporary, then the spokespern speaks, then an apology to the customers.
4.The conclusion needs to address the reader, I think you should address them directly. You need to address the reader becasue the reader is a pivotal part of how this situation will be handled. It doesent restate the main point either. Their is no real conclusion. It is an abrupt end.IT does look into the future, but give us more detail on what you're thinking about your company. The memo is kind of verbose. Some parts are wordy and redundant. Slim all the excess downd and just stick to the point. It is good so far though, focus on the future more and what the actual workers are suppose to do.

Stork Craft comment

This is a good draft, but its purpose seems somewhat vague. Remember that this is for employees, and you don't what them to walk away thinking "what does this have to do with me?" This document would be more effective with a sharper purpose and main point. What do you want employees to take away from this document? What do you want them to do after reading it? It's important to put this information right up front, because the audience for a memo will likely scan rather than read it.
