Courtney's Introduction

1. My name is Courtney Cummins and I'm from Oxford, NC. After graduating high school in 2006, I went to Penn State for two years before I decided to come back to the South and attend UNCW. I enjoy riding horses, hanging out with friends and just taking it easy. Music is especially important to me and I particularly enjoy country-whether it's traditional, bluegrass, americana, folk or today's pop-country.

2. By taking this class, I hope to enhance my writing skills and learn new things that I can apply to not only my major in Communication Studies, but also to my minor in Journalism. I took this class because I thought it would be beneficial to my Journalism minor.

3. Mr.Tirrell, what type of writing do you enjoy most?

Personal Intro Answers

1. I am Deanna and I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I spent Spring semester of 2009 in Valencia, Spain studying abroad. I am a Spanish major and love to travel and practice my spanish. I love snowboarding, surfing and all activities involving being outside.

2. I enrolled because I am a journalism minor and it was one of the options of classes to take to satisfy the minor. I don't know much about working in the business/corporate world so I expect to learn about how to handle yourself professionally when communicating, writing documents, doing projects in groups, etc.

3. How did you get involved in teaching this course?

Megan's Intro

1. My name is Megan Dawkins and I'm from Charlotte, NC. I transferred here last August from a community college in Charlotte. I'm a junior and a Film Studies major/Journalism minor. Obviously, I love movies and I plan to make them someday! Or help others make them, at least. I love music, painting, and traveling (though I haven't done much - yet)!

2. I enrolled in this class because it satisfies some of my requirements to obtain a minor in Journalism. I hope it will give me a greater understanding of the way things work in a professional environment. From what I read on the syllabus, I can tell I will learn how to do various things I have not done previously, such as creating public relations documents, etc.

3. What is your favorite part about teaching?

Personal Questions Introduction

1. My name is Amanda Irwin and I'm a sophomore from Mount Airy (yes, Mayberry), NC. However, I'm originally from a little town in western Pennsylvania which could explain why I cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers during football season. I also love to read, write, and watch movies.

2. I'm taking this class to satisfy the writing requirement for my English major. I hope to learn how to effectively use whatever skills I may obtain while seeking my degree in a formal business-like atmosphere. Since I'm not 100% sure what I'm aiming for yet with this English degree, I thought covering all possible bases of what I could do may be helpful.

3. For our group projects, do you pick the groups for us (through any method) or do we choose?

Carley's Intro

1. Hey, my name is Carley Tate and I'm from Hickory, North Carolina. No one ever knows where that is but it's right next to Conover, the town with the Dominos incident that y'all heard about today. This is my first year in college, but credit-wise I'm a junior so I'm starting to take classes for my double majors. I LOVE to write and read, and I also like to sing. I played tennis in high school, both for school and on the tournament circuit. Annnndd last but not least my favorite TV show is Criminal Minds and I've made it my goal to make it to the FBI one day.

2. I'm really excited about this class. I'm going to get a certificate in professional writing, and this was one of the requirements so that's why I'm taking it. I think a lot of the stuff we'll be doing is going to be fun, and I'm excited about learning new things.

3. Are we going to be presenting our projects to the class?

Getting to Know Jenna!

1. My name is Jenna Paige Cameron and I was named after a character played by Priscilla Presley on the show Dallas when my mother was pregnant with me. This helps to explain why I might be a little dramatic at times! I love the arts and have a knack for taking something simple and making it extraordinary! I am interested in painting, drawing, writing, music and communication studies. I am always ready for a performance and I am very social and always looking for a bit of fun!

2. I am hoping to learn how to communicate and express my opinions in a professional and open forum. I hope to gain the capabilities to reach others through learning this new explicit communication

3.To Mr. Tirrell: What's the most exciting place you have ever visited or lived?!

Personal Intro

1. Hi my name is Jessica Lynn Gage and I’m from Asheboro, NC. I’m a sophomore and a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology. I have loved the beach since I was a kid growing up in Florida so I really enjoy living in Wilmington at the coast (even though it’s freezing right now). My interests I guess would be music, reading, traveling (Spain is the most interesting place I’ve been so far and I’m hoping to go more places in the future), sports (playing much more so than watching, though I’m not very athletic) and just spending time with friends.

2. I feel like I could gain a great amount by knowing how to write and produce work in a professional manner, no matter what field I end up going into. I wanted to take this class because I think it will give me a greater confidence having learned the most efficient way to do my job in both my education and future career.

3. Why made you interested/ inspired you to teach professional writing?

1. My name is James Williams

1. My name is James Williams and I'm from Swansboro, NC. I'm an English major and a Political Science minor, and I'm currently planning on getting my J.D. after my undergraduate degree.

2. I expect to work through this class as I would with any other course and obviously I hope to make an A. I am enrolled in this course as it is a requirement for my major.

3. What made you choose Dean over Hank?

Sam's Intro

My name's Samantha BonenClark- but since I was little most everyone has called me Sam- and I'm a freshman. I've been a competitive swimmer since I was four years old and have continued it in college as a member of the Swim and Dive team here (go Hawks!). I do enjoy other things besides swimming though: I like writing (when it strikes my fancy), surfing (I'm from Florida), finding new things to do, and learning Spanish (I'm working on at least a minor at this point).
I took this class because I'm still very unsure about my major, I know that I enjoy English so I figured that this would be helpful if I chose to go into any writing-related field. It just so happens that I may be taking an editing internship at a magazine back home for the summer, and if that happens I'm sure this class will come in handy.
For Prof. Tirrell: In thinking back on your college experience, were there any classes or fields you wish you had looked into more?

1. Hi! My name is Kiyo

1. Hi! My name is Kiyo Stilson. I'm double majoring in Anthropology and English with a minor in Creative Writing. I'm into music and playing with my dog; recently I've gotten into painting which is how I've spent most of my time recently aside from school and work.

2. Mostly I signed up for this class because it was required for my english major. I'm hoping that it will help me learn about what careers are possible with my major and what I might want to do after graduating.

3. How does UNCW compare to the other universities you have taught at?

Bonjour tout le monde!

1. Hello everybody! My name's Bess (don't ask me where it comes from, I don't even know). I was born in France , I'm originally from the Philippines. I'm an exchange student and I'll be studying in the USA until 2011. I love travelling, laughing for nothing (...), playing the piano (actually, I'd love to learn how to play drums) and girly things like shopping and buying useless stuff.

2.
First, I expect this class can help me improve my english professional writing because it's very basic as you can see... Also, I hope I can learn how to be synthetical (I tend to write endless paragraphs while trying to describe or explain something) and express my ideas in a better way. This class was required by the TABSA program (that I'm currently attending) to obtain a Double Diploma.

3. Alright, so my question would be: what is the most difficult part in teaching professional writing?

Personal Introduction

1. My name is Anne-Sophie and I am an exchange student from France. I am a Human Resource Management major. One of my main interests in life is traveling. I have been to numerous countries in Europe, Asia and America and hope I will be able to keep on exploring new places in the future. I truly enjoy being confronted with different cultures, which partly explains why I chose to study two years abroad.

2. I enrolled in this class as it was required to satisfy my major. I expect this class to give me tools to interact in a professional manner in any given business setting. English being a foreign language for me, I think this class will prove to be highly beneficial in terms of writing skills and knowledge of language subtleties.

3. Are there significant differences regarding written communication from one field/region/country to another? If so, which are they?

Brooke's Introduction

1. My name is Brooke Kavit and I'm from Chapel Hill. Don't let my hometown fool you though, I'm not a UNC fan at all. I'm majoring in political science and minoring in journalism. I'm a self-professed shopaholic. I also love to travel and am a serious music lover.

2. I mainly took this class because of my journalism minor. I've also always thought working in public relations was something I could see myself doing and thought this class would be helpful.

3. Who are some of your favorite writers?

Hi! My name is Chase...

1. Hey everyone. My name is Chase Holfelder and I'm from Cary, NC. This is my first semester back at UNCW after taking a few years off to pursue music professionally. I started a band here in Wilmington in '05 and after signing a record deal a year later, everyone in the group decided to put school on hold to give the whole music thing a shot. We had some success and toured the entire country numerous times. We also landed a couple songs in several shows on MTV including The Hills and Real World. You can hear some of the band's music at www.myspace.com/themileafter and my solo recordings at www.myspace.com/chaseholfelder.. but that's enough of the shameless self-promotion... :-)

2. I expect this class to help me in my effort to refine my writing skills. English and writing have always been interests of mine and upon returning to UNCW I decided to major in Professional Writing, hence my enrollment in this course.

3. To Mr. Tirrell... I checked out ScreenWrite on your website. It's great! Have you ever checked out Darkroom? It's a piece of software in the same vein. Have you written any other programs?

3. What is your advise for an inspiring writer?

Personal Introductions

Hello,
My name is Max. I am a freshman, and I play tennis for the mens team. I travelled a lot prior to coming here because of tennis and have pretty much lived all over the place. I enjoy listening to music, any athletic activity and reading anything that seems interesting. I hate cold weather and sleeping is something that i have been lacking every since i started attending a university.

I hope to improve my writing, in all aspects. This class caught my attention because the title Professional writing seems like it could open up new avenues for me to pursue. I eventually want to become a lawyer, and i hear writing is very important so hopefully I'll improve in this area.

Have you ever used the techniques that you teach in this class for work not related to UNCW?

Personal Into

1. Hi, my name is Andrew Midgette and I'm from Maryland. In high school I played football and my senior year we went undefeated and were ranked 25th in the nation. I also wrestled and took 5th in the state. I'm continuing to wrestle for the club team here.

2. I expect to learn a lot of new things in this class. I want to learn how to write in a professional way to further get my point across. I also hope to gain insights into other writings and publishing by learning how to do it myself.

3. Have you ever had a job dealing with professional writing other than teaching?
