Respond to the two prompts below in a comment.
- TCT provides a sample proposal structure on page 592. As the book points out, this is not a formula, but a workable model. It's likely that we will not follow this structure exactly in our group proposals for Chapter One; we may not include all of the listed sections, and we may add some different elements. Please discuss (in approximately a paragraph) a structure for your group's Service Learning Project proposal that you think might be effective and explain why.
- Essentially, proposals are documents that present a prospective action to decision makers. Proposals point out the advantages of taking a particular action and the disadvantages of not doing so. We have all tried to influence decision makers at some point. For example, as children we often attempt to demonstrate to our parents the advantage of taking a particular action (such as buying us something we want). Think of a specific time you have made a formal or informal proposal. What was the situation? What did you do? What was the outcome?

1. Our proposal would be unsolicited, as it was not requested by our readers but instead will serve as recruitment and promotional materials for our organization and its readers. We will try to draw them in and make our organization appealing to them. Our proposal will also be external because our readers will be clients outside of the organization who we wish to recruit. Budgeting and a discussion of costs and benefits are a vital part of our proposal because Chapter One representatives mentioned being under a strict budget and that they were unable to create and provide materials such as pens, hats, etc. We'll need to consider how much money they're able to spend while considering how to utilize their small budget in the most beneficial way possible. The current situation seems weak so we should focus more on the future of the organization and the project plan. Graphics are important in order to capture the eye of our audience and in regards to creating a new logo for Chapter One.
2. I am currently trying to convince my family to financially support my desire to obtain an internship in NYC next summer. Initially, they seemed mildly interested but didn't discuss it with me seriously as it won't happen for another year or so. However, the more research I did, the more interested they seemed and the more they seemed to seriously consider helping me with an internship in NYC. I explained to them the incredible opportunities I would have with certain companies such as The Weinsteins, NBC, Scott Rudin Productions, etc. and how I might gain future job opportunities through these internships. I also shared with them that NYU provides summer housing for non-NYU college students who need a place to live while obtaining college credit in NYC. They seemed very intrigued by this and hopefully my research and proposal will land me in NYC next summer.

For the structure of our group's proposal in the Service Learning Project, I think we should use a structure very similiar to that of the proposal on page 592. I think in the introduction we should let our client, or the English professor, know all of the ways that students are made aware of the English departments meetings. We should include all the ways they are informed and their advantages, as well as their disadvntages. We must point out to our client that there are better ways to advertise or convince students to come to the meetings. We should point out the flaws with the way things are currently done and explain that there are more effective things that can be done. Our structure then needs to move to presenting our ideas on how to get more people to come to the meetings. We need to explain to the client in full detail our plan of action, how we will do this and where, and the costs and benefits of putting our proposal into action.
One time that I had to make a proposal is when I ran for Director of Formal Recruitment for Alpha Phi Fraternity. It was informal, I simply stood in front of my whole entire sorority and convinced them why I was the best candidate for this position. After I was nominated, I was asked to stand in front and pretty much list all the qualities I possess that are needed to be Director of Recruitment and why thy should chose me. I first explained what was needed to fulfill the role of Director such as great organization and planning and then explained how I use these skills in my daily life and would be completely capable of applying these skills to Recruitment. I told all the girls how I really wanted the position and would put my all into the position, adding in a genuine factor.I also spoke to the girls about strong aspects of our Recruitment that I would emphasis and keep the same, while adding new ideas I had for recruitment and how I would better it. After listing and explaining how I would put the needs and wants of the sorority as whole, and choose the best girls to be in Alpha Phi the girls then voted, after hearing all other candidates speels too. The outcome of my proposal was that I was elected Director of Formal Recruitment.
Proposals
1. Our Service Learning Project proposal should follow roughly the same structure as the one provided in TCT. The introduction should provide general information on the project, namely its characteristics and purposes. This would lead to an overview of the unsatisfactory current situation that prompts Chapter One to launch such a project. An action plan would then be given with the main steps listed and explained. The qualifications’ part would not be included in the proposal as this is a mandatory exercise, meaning students were asked to participate in the project no matter their ability to carry it out successfully. The steps proposed to handle the situation should be clear enough for the readers to understand how we plan on proceeding and the expected outcomes. Costs and benefits should be stressed as well due to the client organization’s limited budget. The proposal should end with a restatement of the main points. The document should be in an appropriate format to look professional and appealing.
2. I remember a time when I had to make an informal proposal to a group of friends. We wanted to go on vacation abroad together during the summer but we were undecided on the destination. I proposed to go to Slovenia. I had to make some research in order to convince them this seemed to be the best country choice. In my proposal, I mentioned all the advantages of opting for Slovenia and made comparisons with other places. Our main concern being to fall under the budget we had set ourselves, a significant part of my proposal was focused on costs. The outcome was positive as they ended up accepting my proposal.
Structuring/making proposals

1. It would be beneficial for our group to discuss the costs and benefits of the proposal immediately following an address of the current situation. The budget for our Service Learning Project is low; therefore, the costs and benefits would be a major concern. We wouldn’t want to introduce a plan that is liked and accepted by the members of Chapter One only for them to later find out that it’s just not feasible. We would then follow up with the project plan and end with a conclusion. The qualifications section would not be necessary considering the audience for our proposal is already aware that we are a group of students in a professional writing course.
2. One of the most memorable proposals I ever made was more or less an informal plea to my parents. In the spring of my senior year of high school, I received my letter of acceptance to Penn State University. I was extremely excited and couldn’t wait to go. But my parents were not as eager. Of course they were incredibly happy that I was accepted to the school I had always dreamed about going to, but they also thought I was being a bit unrealistic. They knew before I ever did that my wanting to attend Penn State had more to do with wanting to get away from home than anything. I was aware of wanting to leave my small town life to do bigger things, but I wasn’t aware of how big a part that actually played. So before I learned this, I begged them to let me go. I explained to them what a great opportunity it would be since Penn State was a well-respected school with a great journalism program. I was quick to inform them that this would be the best chance I would get as far as future opportunities in my life and career go. Either I won them over with my proposal (which is highly unlikely) or they knew it was my mistake to make, but I ended up attending Penn State. It was not quite the experience I hoped it would be, but it was an experience nonetheless. I realized after about three months that everything I wanted was everything I left; so after two years at Penn State, I decided to transfer back to North Carolina to attend UNCW. Even to this day, I still don’t know whether my proposal was a success or a failure.

1. For the Service Learning Project, I think that our group’s best model would follow a mixture of an unsolicited and a solicited proposal. Due to the unique nature of the request, we are required to follow a basic structure of a solicited proposal because the club specifically asked us to come up with documents or logos that would be beneficial at certain events. For example, they asked us to come up with material that could be handed out at the Involvement Carnival and we in turn brainstormed ideas of what the best materials would be. The very fact that we came up with some mediums that may not have been specifically requested by the group is what makes it an unsolicited proposal. So what we are going to have to do is introduce our proposal by noting that the group (Chapter One) requested that certain materials be made that would fit their needs for future events. After that, we would also go into additional ideas that we came up with which could be beneficial to the club that they did not specifically request. From there, it would be a matter of stating our qualifications for presenting the materials we have and how it will be an advantage for the group to obtain them.
2. Recently I made a proposal that was an interesting mix between formal and informal. I work for an online literary magazine on campus and we were coming up with a poster for the Prose Contest that is being held this month. Initially, I had come up with the poster/flyer that started the subsequent ‘tweaking’ to it. At one point, a ‘final’ draft was sent out by the Assistant Editor-in-Chief for this poster and I instantly did not like it due to certain elements that were blocked or I felt needed to be on there/in bigger letters. So I sent a reply to him that was at sometimes formal, and other times not, stating my very blunt opinion on the poster and why I felt that way. Shortly thereafter I sent him a ‘tweaked’ version of his poster which included what I felt should also be on there. In the end, we came to a happy medium that looks wonderful on the bulletin boards around campus.
Proposals
1. A good proposal for this project would be one that pulls outside people in the group and gives them all the information they are looking for. We want to make sure that we cover all the basics and more when writing this proposal. We want to recruit all we can for this club. Focusing on the budget is an important part I believe. As stated from our guest, the money situation is very slim so coming up with new ways to fundraise and get money from outside organizations would be something to point out. Another important this is to talk about future plans of the club and events which can not only bring in members but keep them in the club. Our proposal should also include specific details about what English One is and what they do as a group. I would also be a good idea in our proposal to point out the advantages of being in such a group and the downfalls that the group may have now and ways to improve those.
2. I actually recently had a proposal with my parents this past November. I had been looking at fancy cameras for months and found one that I liked, but was more on the expensive side. I approached them and asked if they would pitch in for some of it. I explained that I realized Christmas was just around the corner, but I had a friends bridal photos to do before Christmas and I wanted them to turn out as best as I could for her. I explained to them the advantages of getting the camera now opposed to later (like my friends bridal photos and the fact that it was on sale and because of that reason it wasn't AS expensive as it would have been before the price dropped), and really skipped the disadvantages (like better models coming out in the future, etc.) We came up with a deal and I ended up getting the camera before Christmas.
Proposal
In the beginning our group should follow a similar format such as the one on page 592 of TCT. We should start with an introduction of course. The introduction should introduce the topic of our Service Learning Project to our audience, Chapter One. This is a proposal, therefore we need to purpose our ideas and what we intend to accomplish. We can move into a project plan. This is when we will discuss what types of medium we will be using or plan to use. We need to make sure our client gets a good feeling about what we are proposing. We want to grasp their attention.
In the past I had to propose and idea to my parents. I wanted to move into a new apartment but I had to get my parents on board. I needed to go out and do my own searching without their help. Once I gathered all of my information I was able to present to them what I found and show them that I kept my options open and searched as much as possible to the best deal, location and appearance. After I was able to sit them down and show them the information I had gotten together, they listened to what I had to say and were very proud of how I took the initative to do all of that on my own. At that point they helped me pick the right place for me.

The proposal for our Service Learning project should be very similar to the one on page 592. There should be an introduction that discusses the purpose and stresses the importance of our subject, and that nicely transitions into an explanation of the current situation. Then the project plan should discuss in detail how we wish to solve Chapter One’s current advertising dilemmas. It needs to explain exactly what kind of promotional materials we'll be creating to help the club gain more members. Costs and benefits should also be heavily focused upon because the group is working with a really limited budget.
Back in high school I was accepted into a summer study abroad program in the UK. The trip was only about four weeks long but the tuition was pretty pricey. Before talking to my parents about going I researched the benefits of an international experience on college applications and different ways I could raise a portion of the tuition myself. I sat my parents down and informally proposed the idea of attending the program. I must have done something right because they agreed to let me go and helped fund my trip.

The outline on page 592 and the example on 593 are good examples and templates for the proposal our group may use. The model points out the different areas that are used in the proposal. I think for our project a few parts will not be as important as others. The budget may not have as much importance in this project since there really doesn't seem to be much of a budget. I think we should focus our proposal around the Introduction, Current Situation and most importantly around Project Plan. The example, uses the memo format and points out the different parts of a proposal. The conclusion will be important because we are going to have to reassure our customers that we can do the project and do it well. Also, i think our qualifications are going to be necessary because we want to sell ourselves as able candidates for the project.
At one point i really wanted to go take an art class. At the time I really wanted to go to school for architecture, but things have changed. I told my father that drawing would be a necessity if i ever was to pursue that career. I took the class stuck it out and realized that i had no talent what so ever in drawing, or any other artistic fields apart from photography. The outcome was a change in my goals. I realized that i had no clue what i wanted to do and therefore i was glad i took the art class so i could figure out that i wasn't meant for architecture.
Proposal
Their are several different types of proposals that you can propose. I Think using the front matter and the introduction have to stay in the proposal because that brings everything to the light. You will also need to include the Conclusion and Back matter because these bring everything full circle for the reader. I would in our proposal include what needs to be changed and why it needs to be changed, alot of things that we are trying to help them change, have been in circulation amongst themselves for awhile so they will need to get used to making these big changes. We also need to set our audience and determine who we are talking too.
I remember one time when I was around the young age of 10. I Wanted to play select soccer but my parents didnt want to give me the money so that I Could play. I begged and pleaded and praticed my butt of all summer so I could play. I told them that if they let me play they would never regret it. They have never regretted it. They got their money's worth.

1. The structure for our Service Learning Project proposal will definitely roughly fit the guidelines that are set on pages 591-593. Of course, it will begin with an introduction that will address Chapter One's need for recruitment and event promotional materials; the introduction will also mention the materials that we think best fit Chapter One's needs. Next, the proposal will go into further detail about Chapter One's current situation and what materials they may need; the next paragraph will provide an indepth description of the materials we propose. The last body paragraph will discuss the benefits of the proposal. Because Chapter One does not have much of a budget, we will mention that our proposed materials our cost friendly. In addition, Chapter One will gain more members and students attending the club's events. Obviously, the proposal will end with a conclusion to make it well-rounded.
2. I remember one time I made an informal proposal to my parents to let me live away from home when I went to college, even though I went to a university in the same town as them. I explained to them the advantages of letting me live on my own for the first time, without their guard; I felt that I would gain a better sense of responsibility and an independence. Plus, I pointed out to my parents that not only would it benefit me, but also them; they could focus more on taking care of my younger brother, and wouldn't have to worry about me so much. The outcome of my proposal was that my parents let me live on campus.
Proposal Pondering
1. I feel like our group could keep the overall basic structure for our proposal as what is shown on page592, exclUding the section on qualifications seeing as our only actual qualification id our own involvement in the english department and our clients intrustment to our abilities to make their own club a little more thriving and popular to attend by english majors and those with a pasion for english and liteature. Becuause this is a fairly new club there may not be a ton of backgound or "current situation info.
2. For Spring break i despreately wanted to go with my best friend Becca Edens to her audition for 'So You Think you can dance. The issue was that the audition was in Nashville and seeing as i live at home with parents i had some major persuading to do. Of course mother dearest thought it not safe for 2 girls to travel alone, and in response to her immediate rush of danger i created a traveling plan. It included money, division if time and how long we stay at each rest. I was denied the freedom to go not because of safety after my presentation but rather because my friend had a surprise death of a parent in which a trip to nashville was put on the back burner and the needs of another friend took the foregroudn
Service learning project response
1. I think that a clear introduction for our service learning project is the most important thing to start out with by stating our purpose and goals and how we attend to achieve them through this project. We would modify this model a bit as it does not exactly seem fit for the type of work we are doing but next we would need to describe the current situation of the Chapter One club. We would need to explain exactly who they are and what they are about. Next in our proposal we need to explain exactly what we plan to do. If we were to create posters to advertise the poetry smack down we'd need to state that. We wouldn't exactly need to discuss qualifications in this project nor a budget. We just need to stat our purpose, our plan and how we are going to execute it.
2. I applied for an internship with a study abroad company this semester to promote studying abroad at UNCW for a specific program called International Studies Abroad. Part of the application was creating a proposal for some sort of event the person applying for the position would do on campus to help draw in kids who wanted to study abroad. I created a proposal for an event for students who have interest in studying abroad and the concept was to hold site specific interest meetings and have a meal of food based out of the country of the students' interest to study abroad. I figured this would help generate more interest in students to actually follow through with studying abroad. The outcome hasn't yet happened but it seems like a good proposal!

1. I would keep the same general structure of the proposal onpage 592 except the qualifications since we are not experts in this field, and it could possibly discredit us since we are just students learning how to do this. In the background we need to discuss our thoughts on the proposal and what our goal was. Then we need to highlight the current situation and make it known that the advertisement we chose is the best possible option. We are trying to persuade/convince people that it would beneficial to join Chapter 1. This is why I think it is important to stress the costs and benefits of this club. Since students are so busy, they need to be made aware of all the advantages there are in joining and participating in Chapter 1. If there isn’t anything to gain most students wouldn’t join.
2. I had to make a proposal to my mom last year in order to come to UNCW. I was getting recruited for football and wrestling and I had a number of schools that I was interested in. However, as time went by and things didn’t fall into place I decided I wanted to stop playing sports and just go to school and have a life. My mom was always supportive of what I wanted to do; however, doing this would require a lot more expenses and also going 6-8 hours away from home wasn’t something she was excited about. I reminded her of everything I had accomplished in my HS career and that I deserved a break and to do what I want. She gave in and supported me coming here ever since.
Proposal
I can picture my group's proposal as an external proposal, but one that's solicited (is there even such thing? I feel like there should be). It can't be an internal one because our class isn't a part of Chapter One, but help in advertising seems like something that a club would ask for. Initially, it should include some background information: maybe some statistics about club membership and attendance, and then the main point (this set up may be combining the "current situation" and the "intro" depending on how much information each subject requires) . The main point should clearly state that we have ideas for advertising this club to the student body and the following proposal will lay out those ideas. From this point forward our proposal may be a lot like the outline (but we can always leave some room for change-it' not a strict format). We can lay out the project plan, and if there are any tasks that require certain skills (i.e. making and editing a video) we can talk about it in a "qualifications section", and any costs (like for printing pamphlets or something) can be discussed right after. A conclusion and some graphics could be included if they are necessary.
Personally. as an oldest child in my family I have had to sort of pave the way through life in my household-this includes proposing and bargaining for things and privileges with my parents. One thing in particular that I had to carefully propose and bargain for was coming to an out of state college. My Mom especially was against it, but i did my research and spoke with my dad and we convinced her that I could do it. It was an informal proposal but I still had to lead her into it with an intro and assure her that I was aware of my current options in state, but then I pointed out that I could swim here on the swim team, it was next to the beach, I was willing to help pay for it, and if necessary I would come home if it didn't work out. Obviously she conceded, and the plan of my proposal has been in action ever since.
Reading Response #6
1. I think our group's proposal to Chapter One should be similar to the example in TCT, but not identical. I feel that the "Description of the Current Situation" section included in the book is unnecessary for our particular proposal, as Chapter One is already very aware of their current situation. We'll simply need an introduction, a description of our project plans, the costs and benefits (budget), and a conclusion. These four sections will be suitable for our purpose, audience, and context.
2. After my senior year of high school, I made an informal proposal to my parents to let me go to California with my brother. He is quite a bit older than me and already had the road trip planned out with his friends. He said it was fine that I tagged along; all I had to do was convince my parents. I planned out exactly what I was going to say to convince them and, one night at the dinner table, carefully chose my words as I proposed the idea. I must have chosen the right words because they let me go with little to no resistance!
Proposal
Our groups proposal structure will probably similarly resemble that of the sample proposal on page 592. We will inform the English Club of our designs and offer ways to better inform students about the English club meeting times and what it has to offer. We might possibly offer more than one way to inform students and with the help of the English club, pick two. We can display the same set of information, but present it in different mediums so they can visualize how students will receive the information about their club. We can talk about the advantages and disadvantageous of each and determine which would be most effective.
I made an informal proposal to my parents to help me buy a car after my first one died. I pointed out the negatives of not having a car such as not being able to drive home, not being able to have a job, not being able to escape an emergency situation or evacuate during hurricane season, not being able to get groceries when I needed, and not always being able to attend church. I promised to get a job if they helped me buy a car, and they agreed. I also now pay for my car insurance and all my own repairs. I think its a fair trade for them helping me with a car!
