Service Learning Project

Summary:

For this assignment, students working in groups will produce promotional documents for the Professional Writing program's Certificate in Professional Writing (CPW). Each group will submit:

  • A 3–5 page report addressing how to promote the CPW effectively to a specific student pool. This report should cover:
    • Effective promotional strategies
    • Potential materials to create
    • Key people to contact
    • Events to attend
    • etc. 
    Reports should support their findings with research and fact rather than speculation and assumption.

  • At least one sample material (handout, poster, pamphlet, fact sheet, etc.) that effectively targets the corresponding student pool.

  • A client presentation designed to summarize the report and demonstrate the sample material.

The client will provide feedback that will directly impact students' project grades. During the production process, students will submit weekly individual progress reports.

Through this project, students will practice working collaboratively to produce professional materials for an authentic client. In so doing, students will demonstrate their understanding of audience awareness, research, ethos, professionalism, and document design.

All materials created for this project become the exclusive property of the client. If clients are unable to provide project feedback within an appropriate time frame, the instructor will make all project grading decisions. The instructor retains final authority over all project and course grading issues.

  1. Gantt Chart (5% of project grade, group)
  2. Progress Reports (5% of project grade, individual)
  3. Report (40% of project grade, group)
  4. Sample Material(s) (30% of project grade, group)
  5. Client Presentation (10% of project grade, group)
  6. Postmortem (10% of project grade, individual)
