•Purpose
My motivation for these instructions are simply to portray accurate knowledge for beginners to comprehend and perform a difficult exercise called the Clean and Jerk, which in return will be very beneficial in all types of workouts. I want beginner lifters to understand the importance and effectiveness of Olympic lifts, especially the clean and Jerk. The Clean and Jerk is a very hard lift to understand and do correctly especially for beginning lifters; therefore, understanding the proper form is the key ingredient, and crucial in succeeding. Beginners must understand that improper form with an exercise such as this can lead to injury if not performed accurately. I want to inform, educate, and motivate my audience to become excited about expanding their exercises while feeling secure enough with my instructions to tangibly grasp and perform the Clean and Jerk. My purpose of communication is ultimately to clarify instructions so that my audience may achieve their goal in a safe and effective manner and for beginners to see the full perspective of exercising and lifting.
•Audience
We learned in Compose, Design, and Advocate that first we must “concretize” our audience. Therefore, with purpose, I should start by finding the foundation of my audience in which I am trying to communicate with. For this particular set of instructions it seems that the accurate age group will still range from eighteen to thirty -years -old. Even though it seems that the age of thirty is too old for beginners, we must understand that it is never too late to get in better shape, and this is one of the best lifting exercises to accomplish that exact task. Overall, I will be trying to communicate with fitness enthusiasts that want to learn more lifts and increase their gains.
•Context
The context of this instructions plan will be designed for people that are in a tangible, hands-on gym atmosphere. Reason being, most people do not have the weightlifting equipment they would need to perform this at home, and simply, I do not recommend it either. Therefore, I intend for most to be in a gym and have a partner or at the least a spotter in case of emergency; especially for beginners.
•Strategies
I plan to use a sequence of numbered plans to emphasize and clarify each step of the lifting exercise efficiently. This set of plans will have more steps and no technical language to grasp the simplicity that is needed. Also, visualization is very important to understand all the motions you have to go through to complete such a difficult exercise; I think a video would best capture this so the audience can understand the fluidity of the lift.
•Medium
My first plan for medium will be printable, online, step-by-step instructions with pictures in which the reader is able to take inside the gym and perform. The video will be for the audience to watch beforehand to understand the importance of fluidity within the exercise, and also, I hope that it will motivate the audience to get out there and work hard.
•Arrangement
My arrangement design will be fairly simple in a numerical step-by-step list with pictures to correlate with the instruction. I am seemingly keeping it simple to emphasize each step and the importance of every move, stance, pull, and push so that the audience will have a complete and injury free end result.
•Testing
For testing I would get friends that are beginner lifters to test my instructions by performing the Clean and Jerk by reading and applying my design plan to see if there are any faults or ways I can communicate better. Also I would ask a stranger that is a beginner lifter at the gym to perform the lift by reading my design plan so that I may get an unbiased opinion of the effectiveness of the instructions.
Feedback
Purpose is covered most thouroughly. What i found interesting was your intentions; wanting people to not only be able to perform this olypmic lift, but also do it correctly and without injury.
Arrangement is probably covered least, mainly because it does not need much explaination for this topic. Something i would like to know more about the arrangement is will you add any kind of bold tips or warnings and will it be all on one side of the paper so that people dont have to flip it over to read on.
One thing that is similar to this instruction set and mine is having a tangible medium. Both of our topics have tangibility as an almost necessity for our audiences.
I think if the instructions were online it would be ineffective because the audience would have to memorize the instructions when going to the gym. I think that if the instructions came from an actual person it would be very helpful.
New lifters
I think that your audience section was very detailed and therefore helpful in understanding who you were trying to go after with your directions. I think that having a printable format that a beginner user could print off and then take to the gym is a very good idea.
I think that all sections were thorough in their descriptions and details, so I guess I will have to comment on the section that was the least thorough. I think that the testing section was good but could use some work.
I am not really sure how this instruction sets connects to me, short of having common interests in going to the gym and staying healthy.
I do not know how you could change your audience, because instruction sets for exercises such as the clean and jerk are designed for two main audiences, one that has little to no knowledge on the subject and one that is looking to improve what they are already doing. The author is clear in his points that his audience is not incredibly large as far as age goes because there are not very many 80 year-old ladies that are searching the internet for how to throw up the big weights.
