College Tuition Movin On Up!!!

This is an article about how college tuition, for many colleges, is beginning to rise. It talks about how many tuition prices are rising as much as 5 to even 6 percent. The article gives some statistics and some prices of out-of-state tuition compared to in-state tuitions for different colleges. The article makes a point to discuss issues of WHY tuition is rising. I thought it was interesting that many colleges are raising prices only because they are "striving to be the best." It states this could be by means of getting state of the art technology to attract the "best" students. I thought this kind of went along with our discussions about American culture and always wanting to succeed and have everything. How do you feel when you read this, colleges taking your money and using it just for the "title" of a prestigious college. Do you think this issue will cause more kids to not be able to attend college?

Crazy tuition!

I think it is totally crazy for tuition to rise. I know the Ivy League schools want to keep their "prestigious" titles, but one has to ask, how far will it go? I think that the Ivy League schools are already known as prestigious schools, and if we end a rise to the tuition of all schools, then they will keep their prestigious titles. I think there needs to be a limit to what in state colleges cost, rather the state colleges. I think they should be less expensive, so more students could attend college. Then, more students wouldn't been in debt once they get out of college if there was a certain cost each year that was the same through out their college carreer. I understand that private colleges cost more, because they are private. I think those schools could even be more reasonable.

Getting sick of it

I think it is getting ridiculous how high the prices for tuition are getting. I am an out of state student along with my three roommates and we all pay the full price. It bothers us all the time when we see the brand new university vehicle go by fully loaded with CD player and all. Then we keep seeing all these buildings go up like the newly planned Tennis Complex. I just wonder how much we need these things. I like tennis but, how much profit can it be bringing in? Then they say we the computer paper is costing too much. We need computer paper not a tennis complex. I think the university needs to get a grip on what is really important. I am just getting tired of seeing my tuition go to things that do not help my education.

increase in tuition

I agree that some of the reason for rise in tuition costs is because of colleges wanting to preserve their prestigious title. But, the article does mention that student aid and healthcare are very expensive and account for much of the increase. There are a lot more low income families needing financial aid and healthcare costs are always on the rise. I think there needs to be some plan put into effect to possibly lower tuition costs, because it will start to affect the amount of students who are able to attend college.

I love being a male caucasian

I have nothing wrong with lower-income and minority students receiving financial aid, because that is the best way for them to climb their way out of the gutter. But I'm from a middle-class white family with two younger brothers. And while my family shouldn't have a problem paying their way through college, it will definitely hurt our long-term financial situation with tuition costs on the rise. I suppose the best thing to do is work your butt off in high school and try to get a scholarship.

Out of State Students Get Short End of Stick

For an in state student Purdue is a great deal. At twelve grand a year you can walk out of here with a top ranking degree in about anything.
It is quite sad that out of state students have to pay nearly three times as much as in state students. I don't see the need for such a high price. They could at least offer more scholarships to help even out the cost, but the truth is, that Purdue offers more scholarships to in state students. I do think out of state students should pay more since the university is funded by the state of Indiana.
If we are funded by the state of Indiana and receive numerous monetary donations why should we be paying so much? All of Purdue's buildings are named after people who have made extremely large donations. Very few buildings are actually named after famous boilermakers. Purdue even has the John Purdue club, which is a club of people who annually donate to the University.
With all of this income how much more money does Purdue actually need. I am going to have to agree with the author and his statement
that the high prices may be related to the need for univerities to be recognized as prestigious.

College Tuition

With college tution going up the way it is, it could definately cause more kids to not attend college. One thing that these kids need to consider though, is how important a college degree is. There are so many scholarships and grants out there to help kids pay for a college education. Also, student loans are availible to everybody. This may not be the most desired way to pay for school, but hopefully you will make enough money once you get a degree to pay off those loans.

tuition

it is getting rediculous that these prices continue to rise. it already costs an arm and a leg to go to school, and to think that the prices are continuing to rise seems crazy. i think schools need to look at what they are using this money on, then see how important it all is. i dont expect college to be dirt cheap, but enough is enough.

Tuition Rising=Trouble for Students

i definately think this will be an issue for many kids when deciding to go to college or not, and where to attend. College tuition is already outrageously expensive, atleast for most out of state students. Getting financial aids and grants is not always as easy as people make it out to be, in fact its very challenging, competitive, and takes a great deal of time. Many students also have to pay for their own schooling and making tuition higher, especially for schools that do not have locked tuition can result in students possibly having to transfer. It is a known fact that Americans are very concerned with economic status and stability. I think that raising tuition would result in people thinking the school was more prestiges, think about the toped ranked colleges, all of their tutions are very expensive. Tuition rising harms the students, but reputation wise i think in the long run would bring universitys up.

okay okay

i would totally agree that it does cost tons to go to school - to credit myself i am paying for a good amount of my school that is not covered by my loan and a few smaller scholarships. i also know exactally how much it is because i deal with my billing by myself. but yeah it does suck that prices are going up, but it is worth it to me. it makes me appreciate that i can even think about going to college...sure the social scene is sometimes more of a priority than my homework, BUT when i know how much it costs my family - then i will open a book. it makes sense that tuition will rise, we all knew that coming to college. but for me it is basic econ - paying for my life (education and opportunity to grow in life) here at Purdue is just worth it...period.
