cell phone ban urged for teen drivers

weekly discussions

This article discusses the National Transportation Safety Board's concern with the increase of cell phone use while driving, especially among beginning teen drivers. I found it very interesting that researchers found last spring that teens and young adults on the phone while in a driving simulator reacted as slowly as elderly drivers not using a phone. My question is, if more restrictions are made, will people make an effort to stop using their cell phones, and will it really have an effect on the amount of traffic accidents?

This should stop

I think that it's good that they are trying to make restrictions against using cell phones while you're driving. Even though I am guilty of always using my cell phone while I'm driving and it would be hard to stop; I think if it was really made an enforced law people should obey it. It would prevent so many accidents in the future. I know that when I am talking on my cell phone I am very distracted and really don't concentrate that much on my driving. Even though I do have an ear-peice for my cell phone I still need to flip it open to answer it and that itself is a distraction. I think it would be worth it to stop using cell phone while driving because it would save lives.

Teens and cell phones

I am in agreement with this article. I admit I do talk on my phone while I am driving, but it is really hard for me to talk on my phone while driving, because I have a manual car, which means I require one more hand to drive, rather than having an automatic car. I have noticed with myself that sometimes when I am on the phone while driving, I really won't be paying much attention to either the person who I am talking to, or where I am going; which is really scary to finally realize. I think when new drivers are learning to drive, they need to put all their focus on the car and their surroundings and not a phone call. This would probably prevent a lot of teen wrecks.

Less Cell Use, Less Accidents

I agree with the context in this article. I did not know that the major cause of deaths for young adults was connected to cell phones. This ban is something that has been a long time coming. In Illinois right now, it is illegal to be on a cell phone while driving unless you are wearing a headset. This applies to people of all ages, though. It would be a good idea to restrict newer drivers to the used of cell phones no matter what the age. Since the majority of new drivers get their license at age sixteen, it is more convenient to apply the rule to them. The best way to help prevent these accidents would be to ticket those who are not of a proper age limit, and are considered new drivers. This can be debated though, because usually the ones who will be most likely to be the ones getting lost on the road, will be young drivers. So in cases like those, cell phone would be a necessity. In the bigger picture, however, the ban using cell phones while operating a vehicle could save hundreds of lives.

Not just teens

I admit to occasionally talking on the phone while driving but I hate it when others are talking on the phone. Almost always, when I am “gesturing” to a fellow driver, the other driver is on the phone. But, it is not always teens, a lot of the time it is the soccer mom or the business person. I think it is a little easier for the law makers to impose laws on the youth then have laws that affect them. After reading this article, I even thought about that in two months I will be 20 and not have to worry about being a teenager to be affected by this law. When really, the law should apply to everyone behind the wheel.

cell phones

I can see how people would try to crack down on teens using cell phones while driving but face it, stopping people from using the cell phone while driving will not happen. They have so many ways they cell phones can be used, they can get head sets, have it integraded into the car. Some cars even come equipped with ONSTAR systems. I belive that the way that people can talk on cell phones can be enforced but wouldnt cops want to use their time more wisely and go after people, like, I dont know, dealing drugs? Gang violence?

What do teens think is so

What do teens think is so important that they need to make calls while driving? It seems to me that most cell phone use is unimportant and unessesary. Every time I walk out of class I see everybody pull out their cell phones and begin a conversation between class. What Could be so important between two students at 8:20 in the morning?
I think a ban on cell phone use while driving would be great. I don't think teens would be affected greatly by banning calls at that time since most calls aren't that important. I think it definitely would be a lot safer and prevent a lot of accidents. Even bicyclists are unsafe using cell phone. How many times have you seen or nearly been hit by an unsteady bicyclist talking on a cell phone? Mabe a ban is need for them to.

The government does too much.

I do agree that new drivers need all the practice they can get without distractions first. I understand that cell phones are very useful and needed. Cell phones are very distracting whether it is trying to find it when it rings, or playing with it, or the actual conversation. Young drivers can still carry a cell phone but should pull over to talk or wait until they arrive at their destination. However, I'm not sure if the government should be putting a ban on it. One day parents will have to step up and protect their children for themselves.

boo to the ban

I think that is ridiculous. What happens when there is an emergency? This could result in death. It said in the article that the use of cell phones slows down reaction time to those of elderly people. Well then the elsderly should be restricted from driving altogether. It is not fair to ban the use of cell phones from JUST teens. I never use my cell phone (mainly cause nobody calls me which makes me sad) but I don't think it is right to ban the use of cell phones from just teens. I know many people that are well over their teenage years and drive 10 times worse than me. If their is a ban on cell phones it should be a ban on all drivers and not just teens.

Yeah OK

the article lacked hard evidence which linked teens and cellphones to accidents, it lacked to menshion about adults and cellphones. Also why did the article not say anything about headsets, or about phone speakers which will allow you to drive with two arms and talk at the same time. that has to be an issue, due to the lack of distration that should have on a driver.

hmmm

okay yeah...so cell phone use when a person is driving is not the best idea. i dont disagree that PEOPLE shouldnt use their cell phones but all the rules are set for teens. while yes, it is smart to say that teens while learning to drive shouldnt use their phones and have a limited (or no one) amount of people in their cars, it is still annoying. i guess i dont really care much about anything to do with driving right now because it doesnt effect me since i dont have a car at school.

cell phones

I do agree that new drivers need to have has few distractions as posssible, but cell phones are very handy and convienient. If you are a new driver and get lost, a cell phone is a good way to find your location. I understand that it may be a factor in some accidents, but to ban them is rediculous.

i agree cell phones do

i agree cell phones do affect our driving, but i dont think that even if a restriction was put in place there would be any way to enforce it. are cops going to pull people over and search their cars for cell phones? i dont think that there will be a restriction put in place, and even if there is i dont think that any teens will follow these rules

Cell phone restrictions

I agree that cell phone use and for not just young people should be banned while driving. I don't think that there is any real way to enforce this except for if a police officer sees the driver using the cell phone while driving. Then they can pull them over. Too many people are impaired when driving while talking at the same time. I don't know how many people I see driving and the moment they start talking on cell phones they are all over the place, they speed up and slow way done, its crazy. As soon as they are off their phones they are good drivers again.

no non-hands free cells at all

I don't think anybody should be allowed to use cell phones on the road unless they're hands-free, especially teenagers. It's way too obvious in the statistics that teenagers are the cause of the majority of accidents, and cell phones are a huge contributor to that fact. I personally know a few friends who have totalled their cars while reaching for their cell phones, but luckily they were unharmed. Others, however, are not so lucky, and hopefully a ban will drive down the fatality rate.
