Wikipedia May Go To Print

weekly discussions

I thought this article was perfect for this week because we are doing a project dealing with wikipedia! This article is about wikipedia being made into print for readers in the developing world. Tell me what you think of this idea, and if you think it would be beneficial.

Great Idea

Distributing a print version of Wikipedia sounds like a great idea to help spread knowledge to developing nations. However, I think only the most stable and basic topics should be included. Hopefully Wikipedia can get the funding to go through with their plans to do this and also create DVD encyclopedias.

Wikipedia

I think that this would be a very controversial subject. Many people think that Wikipedia is not very creditible, as we know from the articles we discussed in class. I think that it would be beneficial, to a degree. At the same time, I think it would take away the concept of people adding and revising the website, because it would be in writing where people could not revise any articles.

Wikipedia

I don't really know think going to print is actually the best idea for Wikipedia. As we all can see, it has so many mistakes and errors in it already, and if it does go to print then would it not be online anymore? I thought the whole point to Wikipedia is a FREE online encyclopedia, going to print would defeat the purpose of that. I don't know...I guess if it went to print it wouldn't make a difference because I still wouldn't want to use it for any reference sources in the future anyways. I think it's just not a credible source.

Wiki-print

I think this is a good idea as well. Wikipedia has a lot more info on some subjects and has information on subjects that are not even given in other encyclopedias. Wikipedia may not be considered a credible source, but it does give some facts and also the opinions of other which may be helpful. Overall, I think it is a good idea and it will be helpful to others.

It is then an Encyclopidia

If Wikipedia is changed into print it has a very big flaw. The hole concept of Wikipedia is the user ability to change and motify articles and facts. If the article was print, than no one else would be able to edit the document, or change and article. The print version would be much like the same as an encylopidia, but without the reliability and support that comes with it. I believe that printing out wikipidia would only deminish the concept and meaning of what wikipedia stands for.

Great Idea but It Will Come at a Cost

It is a very good idea to bring this information to undeveloped countries. Although if this is to be printed it is going to come at a cost. There has to be some sort of cost for manufacturing, materials, and distribution. I also wonder who will pay for it. Will the Wikimedia foundation pay for all costs or will the users in these countries pay? If users were to pay it would defeat the whole purpase of Wikipedia being a free Encylopedia available to anyone.
I also am concerned about these articles being up to date. Since they are changed frequently the print verisions would have to be revised at about the same rate as the online articles are changed. To prevent this articles would have to be frozen which once again conflicts with the ideals of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia

I think putting Wikipedia into print will be useful to spread knowledge to developing countries. But, this does defeat the whole purpose of contribution and revision to articles. It seems that print encyclopedias would fulfill the purpose of spreading knowlege to other countries. I think Wikipedia should stay as an online source.

Obviously my first

Obviously my first curiosity of was the funding of the book. Seems like it would be kind of expensive to put out a text version but a CD would be a lot cheaper. I would think that these would come out of date pretty quickly and that there would be a lot of errors. Since there are already a lot of errors in the ones online, are they going to go through everyone before putting it in print?

Although this sounds like a

Although this sounds like a good idea, it would take away from the idea of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is supposed to be free and with Wikipedia going into physical form, people would probably cost. Plus, people would not be able to edit right then, when they read something. WIkipedia is supposed to be casual an able to be added to and edited. If they want a physical form they should look into a regular encyclopedia.

Wikipedia

I think that this idea is controversial because it is a good idea to bring this access to people of developing nations. They need access to world wide knowledge, it shouldn't just be for those nations that are already developed. But at the same time it has a negative affect because it would become unchangeable by the public defeating the whole purpose of why it was created in the first place.

well...

i think that it is a pretty cool idea, but i mean is it necessary? it would be cool if they end up doing it, but wouldnt it just be the same to give everyone in Africa a set of encyclopedias? i guess it could help the fact that wikipedia is basically a relatively small community of users compared to the world population. maybe i just feel like if they do it, cool; if they dont do it, eh?

wiki

im not very sure why they are considering putting wikipedia to print. it is supposed to be an online feature that allows people to edit it at anytime. by putting it to print, that would take away from its main point, free-editting encylopedia.

Ironic

This article is somewhat inspiring to help us to the best that we can on our project because it could have a change of being edited into a printed version. I think this would be a good idea, not only for sales, but for resourses as well. With Wikipedia able to gain information from sourses from all over the world, this could be someting that could help expand research throughout the world.
