Smoking Ban

weekly discussions

The following two articles relate to the Smoking ban which is presenlty being voted on by west Lafayette officials. If the final vote goes through, smoking shall be banished from resturants and other public places. What are your feeling about the banishment of smoking? Also they are holding a 15 feet radius of non-smoking on all public areas. Are they now segregating the smokers from the non-smokers? Please place your views on the topic.

I think it's great

I think it's great that they are trying to ban smoking in more public places, especially restaurants because even though there are non-smoking and smoking sections, usually you can smell the smoke from wherever you are in the restaurant. It's good that they are trying to segregate smokers. I think that maybe with trying to ban smoking it will cause people to try to stop. Smoking kills so many people every year and it's a disgusting habit, so more things to try and get people to quit the better.

thumbs up for the smoking ban

I think it is great that there has been an attempt to ban smoking in the public places of W. Lafayette. Not only is smoking dangerous for your health, but second-hand smoke endangers the health of innocent bystanders. Second-hand smoke is hard to avoid even when there is a division of sections in restaurants. I think the band would be generally positive, but this is because I'm a non-smoker. Smokers will definitely be inconvenienced, but they can just choose the alternative and go outside.

Smoking Ban

I think this is a good idea, because some people are allergic to smoke, and some people just don't want to have to inhale it. I think that just because those people don't care about their lungs, they shouldn't damage other people's arround them. Now, if it is outside seating, this issue could because arguable, because it is outside, where smoking is otherwise permitted. I just really think this is a good idea.

NO SMOKING

I agree with everyone that this is an excellent idea. The only revision I have is to let restaurant owners make the final choice on whether smoking is allowed. But any public place should definitely be smoke-free, including outdoor parks and bus stations.

smoking situation

I don't think it is a great idea but I agree with it. I know of many people that have a hard time breathing when smokers are around. It is not banning smoking but limiting it. On campus the rule is pretty much the same as the rules in the artice so it does not affect the students as much. However restricting smoking will anger people and usually when people are kept from smoking they get very moody and easily angered which adds on top of the situation. Although I agree with the smoking restrictions it feels like this step taken is just taking away freedoms we have (even though smoking is unhealthy) and in the end things may get a lot more strict.

well...

personally, i really would enjoy not having to deal with smoke invading my breathing air while im eating. non-smoking sections are a little silly - like smoke cant travel. im not a big fan of smoking, i think its pretty sick, but it seems weird that there can be a law against doing something that is legal. and, what about bars? those are public places (restricted, but still public), and sports bars, pubs, night clubs, and everything like that...? it will be pretty interesting to see what all the smokers do if this gets passed.

Good Idea but it has to be Tough on the Smoker

I do like the idea. Having asthma makes breathing very difficult for me when I am around smoke. I tend to agree with all the others that nonsmoking sections never seem to serve their purpose. Another benefit that I see coming from this is the decreased risk of fire. In the past few years there have been numerous cases of fire in public places such as bars and clubs. This ban would decrease the chances of future accidents.
On the other hand I do feel sort of sorry for the smokers. I would not go as far as calling it segregation because these people are still allowed to enter these buildings as long as they are not smoking at the time. I do however feel sorry that smokers have been at the butt end of many restrictions. They have been taxed like there is no tomorrow and are now being told where they can and can not smoke which I know I wouldn't like if I were a smoker.

smoking ban

I am not quite sure which side I take because I would be glad to not have to breathe in other people's smoke but at the same time it is slowly leading up to taking away peoples rights, even though it is unheathly and even deadly. What could be done in resturuants and near the restricted areas near buildings is that if it is just you, the smoker, or other people smoking or even other people with the smoker who don't care then they should be left alone but as soon as there are nonsmokers around they should immediately put out their cigarettes. If they do not procceed to putting them out then they should receive a fine.

I agree

I believe this is a good idea and the man who said it would do no harm, just inconvenience smokers is right. A lot of people are allergic and do not appreciate it. Even though I believe smpking is a disgusting habit, I also believe smokers should not be around non-smokers. It is dangerous at times.

smoke-free

I am glad to hear they are trying to cut down on smoking in the area. There are many times when i am walking to class that i have to hold my breath because i am following someone who is smoking, and i like to avoid that entering my lungs. it is obvious however that there will be a group of people who think otherwise. im not saying dont smoke, but it would be nice if they could do it somewhere else where non-smokers dont have to breathe it.

GREAT IDEA

i think it's a great idea to ban smoking from restraunts and other public places because i think it would provide for a more comfortable and healthy enviornment for the public. The 15 ft. radius i agree with as well.

I think that it should be

I think that it should be the resturant owner's decision of wether or not they want to allow people to smoke in their resturant or not. If the govenment allows cigarettes to be sold, then why do they want to tell people where they are or aren't allowed to smoke them at.
