Experts: $4 a gallon gas coming soon

weekly discussions

In this article it gives the explanation for rising gas prices. The big factor for gas prices rising is due to two main oil lines were shut down due to Hurricane Katrina. Gas has reached over $3 but experts say that prices of gas should get up to $4 before the prices begin to sink again. The link for the article is below.

This is outrageous!

I think it is outrageous and ridiculous that gas should ever reach that high! I know that our economy has taken a blow due to Hurricane Katrina, but I just don't see how and why gas should ever reach $4. I don't drive right now, because we can't have a car at college as a freshman, but when my parents come to see me, I think it is crazy that they will have to spend $4 a gallon, just to fill up the tank for an hour and a half drive. I have a feeling that there will be a lot of boycotting. People will start to take the bus or ride bikes.

well...

You make a good point, Haleigh, but perhaps I can add something that we may not all be aware of. We have had gas crises in this country before as recent as the late 1970s. You can get a decent summary here. Not only were prices high but there just wasn't enough gas to go around. People had to wait in lines for hours (with idling engines, so a lot of good that did). But you know what happened? People complained, but they waited and paid, because what else can you do? It's true that we can drive less in certain ways (movie companies have recently felt the pinch because more people are staying home with DVDs, TiVo, and movies on demand), but this country is in many ways built on the automobile. There have been interesting studies about the role of the car and truck in the development of America. In fact, you can compare the arrangment of old cities on the East Coast (like New York and Philadelphia) that developed before the car and those in the West (like Los Angeles) that are spread out to the point of making a car necessary. Public transportation has never developed here as it has in other countries, hence our need for a constant supply of cheap oil (even though other countries pay a lot more). It's part of being a young nation that we are bound to those transportation technologies that helped us carved our place in the world.

now that's crazy talk

I always expected gas prices to rise but never this high. Although prices are increasing, I think that in a few years gas won't even be needed. A natural disaster like this could always happen again so we have to be prepared and hopefully gas will be the least of our worries. Honda and other car companies with electric cars are probably excited about the rise of gas prices. Prices may be killing us now, but I don't think it will be a big issue in years to come.

People will continue to pay despite high gas prices

I was definitely not expecting gas prices to reach $4 a gallon. I predict that prices will eventually fall back to normal, but not for a while. Myself, and others included have been complaining so much about the prices. Some have predicted a possible boycott, but I don't think this will happen. Transportation is a necessity in this country and people are going to continue to pay the price. Indianapolis is not a huge city such as Chicago or New York, so access to alternate transportation is not as convenient. Although I believe people will continue to pay for gasoline, I don't think they will get out as much. Therefore, businesses like movie theaters, restaurants, etc. might see a decrease in profit for several months.

It's life

I am just as mad about gas prices as anyone else, and I hate that it's so expensive to fill up my gas tank now. But, unfortunately we have to deal with it. I mean there's nothing we can do about. Gas prices have gone up like this before in the past and it's not like people stopped driving there cars then, and people won't do it now either. I think people may not drive their cars as much, and may decide to buy smaller cars. As much as we hate paying for the gas, we still will.

time for an alternative

Like ahwang was saying, if gas doesn't come down in the near future then it's time to think of our alternatives. Hybrids are already in production, so that's a quick fix. Diesel engines are also making a return, and those are cheaper than spark engines(although at a higher face price). But hopefully research in hydrogen or completely-electric transportation will make huge strides in providing us with an abundant fuel source and a more enviroment-friendly technology.

Stop the Whining!

Iv'e actually been waiting on gas prices to raise even higher than four dollars per gallon. Gas prices have not followed the rate of inflation (which they should follow).
Looking back at gas prices of the past and comparing them to other products and the effects of inflation, we're actually very lucky.
We are especially lucky when comparing ourselves to other nations. We pay some of the lowest gas prices in the world. So I'm not complaining. I really getting sick of the American people whining about how much they pay at the pump. They really don't know how fortunate they really are. So stop the whining.
In response to boycotting, that would be the worst thing the american people could do. Our economy is not only dependent on supply and demand of goods, it is largely dependent on the transportation of those goods. The economy would come to a complete stop if the consumers would not go out to by the products. There would then be no reason for the goods to even leave the factory. This would lock things up entirely. This is especially true in rural areas such as where I'm from. The nearest town is twenty seven miles from home. So public transportation is nonexistant and biking is unreasonable.

Luxuries not Necessities

Yes, gas prices seem to be quite high from what we remember. When starting to drive gas was around $1.50. However, I believe that it will settle down and all ready has somewhat. Times change and we all just have to survive by adapting. We can adapt to not going places all the time or using other sources of fuel. Gasoline shouldn't be our biggest conceren in our loves. Cars started out as luxuries, not necessities.

It does help

I am an avid boater and I have noticed in the past 5 or 6 years an increase in technology. The reason of the increase is the fact that boats consume more gas as well as hold more gas. Not to forget the higher prices paid cause of the marine tax. Recent developments with boats have increased their gas mileage at least 4 times. With this increase, it has helped make these engines a lot quieter as well as more environmentally friendly. Changes will happen to cars and they will become more efficient. I can only hope that the engineers designing these cars are affected by the prices as much as we are.

Gas Cheap or Gone

I think the article gives much info into how the gas prices are rising due to the gas lines in the gulf. It was only time till our prices rose. Over in other counrtys like europe and canada the gas prices are like 5$ per gallon, which is much more tan we have ever seen. Gas is a limited resource though, i do not hear muich about when the Gas while desapear. It wont last forever, and till then i belive gas will only get higher, and this article seems to agreee with me.

I cannot believe gas prices

I cannot believe gas prices are going to be up to 4.00!This change in price i think will definately result in many people changing the way the drive and how frequently. People will have to start making accomadations if they cannot afford the high gas prices. Hopefully this will all settle down and prices will get back to normal. Driving is one of the most used forms of transportation and is definately needed.

gas prices

The price of gas is going to excede $4.00?? I remember when i went to florida in 1997, gas costed 70cents a gallon. It is insane to think that it changed this drastically. Katrina did have a big effect on it however, and the prices will eventually lower. People will probably start car pooling more, riding bikes, or taking buses. I imagine a lot of people beginning to walk a lot more to get from point A to point B.

Gas Commerce

The gasoline industry, just like any other business wants to make as much money as possible, but still be able to keep the customers coming back. Most gas station in the United States fluctuate their gas prices accordingly, but no matter how high the price, most people will pay for it. The higher and higher prices rise, more and more complain about the change, but will still pay the price. With pipeline damage, the cost to buy such a demanding product will be big. The law of supply and demand shows that with less supply, prices rise. With so many plants shutting down, this could be a compensation to keep other gasoline and oil companies alive. Though once, the hurricane problems are under control, the gas prices will start to lower because the plants will be restored and they will be back on track in no time.

i actually had heard this

i actually had heard this already. i guess i dont really mind right now, because i am at school and i dont have a car. it is hard that the gas prices are so high, but maybe necessary? i think this subject is touchy for most people because middle class and lower class people are hit the hardest by it. if one is on a fixed income, and suddenly BAM the gas prices shoot up, that can be detrimental.
