For Project 2, we will work with something with which we are all intimately familiar: commerce. More specifically, we will be dealing with pragmatic issues of product packaging and promotion. Like all acts of communication, particularly those that are explicitly persuasive, advertising is thoroughly rhetorical.
This is a group project. Groups are as follows:
Each group will be given an audio CD with a number of tracks on it drawn from those songs students brought to class early in the semester. Each group will produce an appropriate package for the audio CD (jewel case liner, disk label, etc.). Additionally, each group will produce two promotional materials that target a specific, appropriate audience. Promotional materials include, but are not limited to, the following:
Choice and composition of promotional materials should be driven by a group's specific rhetorical goals and audience. Each package and promotional item should be accompanied by a thorough design plan.
The class will read practical texts over group dynamics and package and promotional material design. Each group will be responsible for leading two class seminars, each lasting 15-20 minutes. Each seminar should include at least one interactive class activity. The topic of the first seminar will be one of the following readings:
The topic of the second seminar will be the use of a specific tool or technique in the context of this project. Techniques and tools include, but are not limited to, the following:
Finally, all group members will turn in an evaluation memo, wherein they explicate their contribution to the group project and evaluate the contributions of the other group members.
Group reading seminars will be presented during Week 6. Group tool or technique seminars will be presented during Week 7. Package and promotional material first drafts are due on Oct. 12. Second drafts are due on Oct. 17. Final drafts are due at the beginning of class on Oct. 19. Evaluation memos should be emailed to Jeremy as attachments on Oct. 19.
