Design Plan for Website

This website provides information about our compilation album, including a list of featured artists and songs, audio samples, and professional reviews. The purpose of this website is to support the CD compilation by reaching the target collegiate demographic through the familiar, multimedia-rich medium of the World Wide Web.

All of the music found on the compilation CD was selected by college students, which implies that this demographic would be a receptive audience. Younger teen consumers and non-college going young adults are a secondary audience, but not a prime target of this advertising campaign.

The website is accessible through the independent domain name XXXX. The website’s URL appears on a separate advertisement flyer as well as the CD packaging itself. The growth of digital music services such as Apple’s ITMS and web-based music advertising platforms such as MySpace imply that this medium is familiar to the target audience. The site’s structure is clearly organized, consisting of five major pages: news, downloads, reviews, artists, and labels. A small audio player appears on all pages that allows the user to hear song samples.

The visual design of the website reflects the themes of the other materials in order to create a unified campaign. The website uses the black, white, and red color scheme and logo that appear on the CD package and the promotional flyer. The minimalistic design and reduced color scheme gives the design a more mature, collegiate appeal when contrasted with other compilation albums targeted toward a younger demographic (such as the “Now That’s What I Call Music!” line, which features bright colors, dancing figures, and garish text). Although this is a similar compilation disk, the older audience group is better served by a more mature visual theme, which does use risqué humor, but does not have the same juvenile connotations.
