"Social Circles and Book Buying Habits" Map Draft 1

"Social Circles and Book Buying Habits" Map Draft 1

My resources are Discover Magazine and Amazon.com . You might have to enlarge this map using Photoshop.

1. What does this map tell you?

2. How might it be an analogy for social circles or artificial intelligence?

3. How can I improve this map other than no anti-aliasing (blotchy pixels)?

Please do not comment on the quality, I know it is ugly. The roads will be labeled and the individual restaraunts will be labeled more clearly. Try to comment on the layout and theme.

1. Is the presentation of times understandable?

2. Assuming you don't know where the eateries around campus are, would knowing the locations and times make you more likely to visit them?

3. Is this something that would be useful? Would you be willin

1) What do you think the purpose of this map is?

2) Do you think this map is too cluttered? Is there too much info on it?

3) How would you go about producing this map? Or what program would you use to make this type of map?

P.S. It's suppose to be transparent so ignore the black.
Too much red?

It will be a different burrito of one opened up but I think I should incorporate that silver feel to the burrito what you think?

You think I Should keep it in landscape?

Above is an example of how to represent the data visually. At first, I tried to use icons, but it proved too bulky and hard to read.

Do you find this example easy to interpret quickly?

Would you prefer the icons to all be identical, with a textual guide indicating the more specific details?

Can you think of a better way to represent this data in such a compressed area?

The spread of Jazz Music across the US.

The spread of Jazz Music across the US.

Very much in progress.

For my own reference:
Period 1: Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and King Oliver.
Period 2: Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, and Billie Holiday.
Period 3: Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Rollins.
Period 4: John Coltrane, Betty Carter, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Wynton Marsalis.

1.) What criteria should I use to choose an artist as my "representative Jazz artists of an era?" Above are what I have chosen so far.

2.) Does the color flow from Dark->Light seem to represent a "spread" of an idea? (it slowly fades out, gets dimmer, etc.)

The above is a rough example of what I am trying to do. As you can see in the top part of the picture, there will be a kiosk in the mall that will map out more than just the geographic locations of the shops.

The bottom part shows what will be on the kiosk: an interactive site. This is the reason why there will be a kiosk in the mall. You can see a graph showing votes on the popularity of several stores, as one of the examples of what the site will do. Users can log in and leave messages to each other or share deals going on that the stores may have neglected to mention.

Sara's maps

Sara's maps

Is it easy to follow the lines from the pictures to the areas or should I use some sort of marker to mark the exact locations?

Would it be easier to see the park boundary when it is shaded or with a thick outline?

Is the map self explanatory and easy to understand for a younger crowd?

Seven World Wonders

Seven World Wonders

Although I am doing the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and not the Seven Natural Wonders, this is the layout I am planning on doing for my first draft. Accompanying the captions would be the actual pictures of the wonders itself so that when I am presenting this to the students, they can get the geographic sense of the distribution of the structures around the globe.
This should hopefully help them before they start voting.

This is a map representing the distribution of Purdue students across the United States.

1. Are 1000, 100, and 10 good numbers for the icons to represent?

2. Is the new england area too overcrowded?
