How to Shoot a Basketball- for Kids

Poppy's picture

Purpose: The purpose of my instructions are to inform my audience on how to shoot a basketball properly. The best possible outcome is that the user will begin to shoot more accurately and develop a sound technique. The worst possible outcome is that the user will not be able to tell how to shoot a basketball properly.

Audience: My audience for this instruction set is going to be beginner basketball players ranging from 7-10 years of age as well as their parents.

Context: The instruction set will probably used by kids and their parents at an outdoor or indoor court or in the privacy of one's own home. The time of day could be any time, but most likely it will be in the late afternoon when children are more likely to be home from school and parents how from work.

Strategies: My strategy is to communicate with the children on an everyday level since they will have a limited vocabulary. They will also need alot of visual aid as well as parental support so my instructions will include portions for the parents to read.

Medium: I will use large easy to read text for the children and good visual aid to make sure the children understand. There will be large callouts for tip for the children as well as the parents.

Arrangement: I will begin by telling the children to wear the proper clothing and to keep hydrated while they play. Then, I will encourage them to keep trying no matter times they may make a mistake. I will then go into the step by step instructions of how to shoot a basketball. I will end it by encouraging the children again to keep practicing.

Testing: I will talk to teachers of this age group to see if my instructions will be suitable for children. I will also ask for the teachers' advice on how I could make my instructions better.

Feedback

This instruction set is very similar to the other one. You have clearly thought out the context and strategy elements of the instructions, as I mentioned in the previous comment.

I would just make sure that if you are going to continue with these two groups you need to make the different sets of instructions noticibly different.

Review

The element that you spent the most thought on was context. If I were writing these instructions I would not have thought about the fact that kids are most likely to be playing sports with their parents only in the late afternoon.

The element that you might need to spend a little bit more time thinking about is audience. It is good that you know you want to target kids but also think about what mood they will be in, what their abilities are, and what they will already know about basketball.

Our instruction sets are on completely different topics, mine on crafts your on sports, but the our targeted audience, children, is the same.

If you changed your audience to a different age group you would need to change pretty much everything about your instructions. You have written your design plan very well for children and therefore your instructions only work for your specific age group.
