How to Shoot a Basketball- for Handicapped Children

Poppy's picture

Purpose: The purpose of my instructions are to inform my audience on how to shoot a basketball properly. The best possible outcome is that the user will begin to shoot more accurately and develop a sound technique. The worst possible outcome is that the user will not be able to tell how to shoot a basketball properly.

Audience: My audience for this instruction set is going to be beginner basketball players who require the use of a wheelchair. Their ages will range anywhere from 10-16.

Context: The instruction set will probably be used by handicapped children and their parents at an outdoor or indoor court or in the privacy of one's own home. The time of day could be any time, but most likely it will be in the late afternoon when children are more likely to be home from school and parents how from work.

Strategies: My strategy is to communicate with the kids on an everyday level. They will also need alot of visual aid as well as parental support so my instructions will include portions for the parents to read.

Medium: I will use large easy to read text for the children and good visual aid to make sure the children understand. There will be large callouts for tip for the children as well as the parents.

Arrangement: I will begin by telling the children to wear the proper clothing and to keep hydrated while they play. Then, I will encourage them to keep trying no matter times they may make a mistake. They may need more time to learn because shooting a basketball from a wheelchair is much harder than shooting it standing up. I will then go into the step by step instructions of how to shoot a basketball. I will end it by encouraging the children again to keep practicing.

Testing: I will look online for ways in which to communicate to physically handicapped children. I will also talk to teachers who may have had experience with these children.

Feedback

I think you covered the context element very well. you seem to have thought through the everyday lifestyle of many families, that parents will not be home until the afternoon when they are done with work. By doing so you can recognize that parents want the time spent with their child to be relaxing and fun. By presenting the instructions in a relax and easy manner it will make it easy for the parents and the child to have a good time, which also ties into the strategies element.

Your arrangement element seemed to be a little less detailed than it could have been. Maybe just make sure you lay out each individual section you wish to include, so you are careful not to miss anything. Once you lay it out you will be able to see if all the sections flow nicely in the order you arranged them to.

My topic and yours are very different, but i also tried to recognize where my audience would most likely be interacting with my material.

If your audience was to change, say to older adults, it would be a drastic difference in just about every element. The main difference would be that an adult would be teaching themselves from the instructions and with handicapped children their parents are doing the teaching.

Review

The element that you cover most thoroughly is purpose. You have a clear idea as to why you want to write these instructions and what the best and worst possible outcomes could be.

The element you cover least thoroughly is strategy. You might need to add how you want to arrange each step.

Both of our instruction will cover warnings before anything else is listed.

If you changed the medium to something more colorful, it might be more appealing to the children, but you have to make sure the contrast between the colors is strong enough so that readers can still read them.
