Draft Design Plan for People with a Musical Background

demetri's picture

I am creating this piece of communication to instruct people with prior musical knowledge on how to dance the bachata. After this targeted audience has read my instruction set, I hope that they will feel well enough informed on the basics of bachata dancing to attempt and hopefully learn the dance, and use it in the future.
I want to share this information and instruct others in this dance because I have always been intrigued by Latino culture, and for this reason I joined a club in high school called El Pueblo. El Pueblo was an organization focused on Latino rights and the improvement of the Latino reputation. I am not Latina, but I joined the club because I wanted to experience being a minority in a group and learn more about the group as I went along. One of the friends I made while in this club gave me some lessons in Latin dance after school, and I loved the movement and the music, although I am not a stellar dancer. However, I feel that if people are exposed to aspects of another peoples' culture that appeal to them, they will respect that group of people more, and that is why I want to instruct others in bachata dance.
The best possible outcome of this situation would be for those who use my dance instructions to learn the dance, enjoy the music, gain a new appreciation for Latinos, and possibly even take the time to learn more about Latin dance. I also hope that because this audience has musical background, learning the dance will be easier because they can understand the rhythm better. The worst possible outcome of this situation would be if my instructions were inadequate to teach the dance to others, and they therefore lost interest in the dance and possibly even Latino culture. In the hopes that the best possible outcome will be achieved by my communication, I believe that the effort is well worthwhile because people are very disconnected from each other and very judgemental, so if learning this dance opens peoples' minds to another culture, it is worth the effort.
The audience targeted in this instruction set shares characteristics that, by my knowing them, will help me specifically reach their needs. These characteristics include knowledge of musical aspects such as beat, rhythm, and instruments. Characteristics also include discipline, from training in music, possibly with an instrument, and attention to detail, which is important in the study and production of music. They will also likely value order in the instructions. I believe that any audience wanting to learn Latin dance will be in a teenage to middle-aged age range, because not many children or elderly people want to learn Latin dancing.
My instructions will be written, and it is likely that the audience will encounter my information while at home, because most people are nervous about learning new dances or performing dances in front of others. Therefore, my audience will likely be relaxed, and hopefully even more relaxed because they can relate the dance to their past knowledge of music.
My instructions need to be viewed on the computer because I need to have the option of including video and audio bits because dance is difficult to learn from still pictures and text, although these will also be used to help get points across. Because I want my instructions to seem professional and correct, I plan to use a Powerpoint show. Using a Powerpoint show will also enable me to include the audio and video links I need.
When arranging my instructions on the Powerpoint, I believe I should begin with some background information on the bachata dance and a little on Latino culture, so the audience can appreciate where the dance came from and get them in the Latino mindset. I will follow this information with some explanation of how the audience can use bachata music to get a better feel for how the dance flows, although this information will be reinstated later in the instructions to keep the audience's connection going. I will then progress to stretches the audience should use to warm up, and go on to explain the basic moves of bachata. The instructions will steadily progress until the audience can perform the basic dance at a normal pace, confidently.
I plan to test my instructions when they are finished by asking my roommates to use my instructions without me present, and try to learn the bachata dance. My roommates are a good sample audience because they have a little musical background to connect to the dance with, although they do not know anything about Latin dance.

comments on the project...

First of all i think this is a great idea! I can see that you are going to enjoy this project and designing thses instructions. I think that with your background you will be able to provide us with great instructions on the dance.

As for the seven rhetorical elements:
Your statememnt of purpose was stated very throughly and explains why you choose this subject.

The only thing i did not see was the differences in the audience. I know that you are going to try it on you roommates but i did not see anyone else.

I think that our desing plans connect more than anything over what our actual topics are. Saying that we both have to go through the same processes and come up with different ideas on how to show people how to do our instructions.

I think that your instructions sets are leaning more toward women and young girls. I think that if your audience was towrad men you would have to possibly go in a different direction then you are now.

All areas are well described and concise, the information is almost overwhelming at times but it is a plan. The best thing is you have a reason or what you are doing, which should mean you will try your hardest.
Although i would have to say that although powerpoint is a great way to convey an idea in a business situation it isn't the best way to teach dance, if i may suggest a video of some sort...
The closest thing between mine and yours is the use of people. By that i mean dance is a way for people to get closer to one another with song, while movies are entertainment.
To a group with a musical background seems like having people with rhythm and without musical background seems like people with no rhythm. There wouldn't be much change in the list. For an older audience would work better, older people like dancing and because of their physical limitations there could be some interesting twist in the plan.
