Service Learning Project

Summary:

For this assignment, students working in groups will produce promotional documents for a non-profit client: the UNCW Composition Program. Each student group will submit:

  • A color poster design at tabloid size (11" X 17") 
    • This design also will be reproduced in the UNCW Composition Guidebook in grayscale at letter size (8.5" X 11")
  • A color handout (size flexible)

A client representative will meet with the class to articulate specific needs. The client also will provide feedback on drafts and final versions, the latter having a direct impact on students' project grades. During the production process students will submit weekly individual progress reports.

Through this project, students will practice working collaboratively to produce professional materials for an authentic client. In so doing, students will demonstrate their understanding of audience awareness, research, ethos, professionalism, and document design.

All materials created for this project become the exclusive property of the client. If clients are unable to provide project feedback within an appropriate time frame, the instructor will make all project grading decisions. The instructor retains final authority over all project and course grading issues.

  3. Client Materials (60% of project grade, group)
  4. Client Proposal and Presentation (20% of project grade, group)
  5. Postmortem (10% of project grade, individual)
