Movie Downloading

weekly discussions

This article says that Movielink and CinemaNow, Hollywood’s movie-download services, will be introducing a new service that offers movie downloads at the same time DVDs are released. It says that the movies will be sold for 20-30$ and the downloaded files can’t be “burned” or played on other devices. Do you think this will work? Do you think that this can really reduce piracy?

Movies

I don't think this could ever replace dvds completely. The fact that after you bought the dvd you can't burn it or reproduce it in any way kind of turns me off of it. One of the nice things about dvds or vhs tapes is that you can bring the movie anywhere. The movie you downloaded this way can only be viewed on your computer screen, which in most cases is probably smaller than most peoples tvs by a considerable amount. But I also don't think this will reduce piracy because I'm sure that as soon as this comes out someone will be working on a program that will make it possible to reproduce the downloaded movies, if this program doesn's already exist.

Movie Downloading

I completely agree. I wouldn't want to pay 20-30 dollars for something that can only be played on my computer. I'd much rather buy the DVD and have full access to it. It also seems like it will be more expensive than a DVD. The price of DVD's dramatically decreases after it has been out for a little while. I wouldn't pay that much for an old movie. I also don't think that it will protect against piracy. It may even enhance it. There are many people that use their knowledge of technology to reproduce these materials.

DVD's

Copying movies has existed ever since they it was possible. People have been ripping off the movie industry for years. Dvd's that are not reproducable will begin to anger customers, because dvd's and cd's are still not perminant data storage, as the discs decay over time, and after about 5 to 10 years begin to become noticeably broken. The ability to back up dvd's is a must, but at the same time it causes the inability to prevent piracy. What filmmakers need to do is find a way to make the dvd worth while, so that people will spend the money on the dvd instead of just copying it.

Completely agree

People aren't going to pay MORE to have a movie that they can only watch on their computer screen. DVDs at least can be taken places. I'm sure that these DVDs will eventually be duplicated and maybe then they will be downloaded more, but only by people who are going to burn them and sell them to make money.

worthless

The fact is that people that download movies are the people that are to cheap to buy a dvd to begin with. They will not pay 20 to 30 for somthing that they can get for free. As long as the video can be viewed in some way there is a way to copy it. Also, as long as there is a way to copy it someone will. It took us 3 months for DVD Jon to find out how the original dvd encoding works and decrypt it. Yes the new High density movies will have "better" encryption however, the main way they are talking about doing it now is practically the same decryption just with more cycles through it. Thus, all of this is worthless the only people that would use the service are the people that would have bought the dvd and they will not make any net profit gains.

I really doubt it will

I really doubt it will reduce piracy just because you can only play the file on your computer. People want to be able to take their movies places to watch with other friends. I think they are just doing this to try to make up for decreases in profits.

There's always a loop hole

I don't think this will work at all. Once something is out on the internet or downloaded to your computer there's a way to get it for yourself. Just look how easy it is for people to download music for free. There is always a loop hole to computer downloading. Hackers and computer geeks will use their knowledge to obtain those movies and either sell them off to make a profit or let everyone download them for free off them. This won't reduce piracy, its just adding one more obstacle to get what we want.

Movie Piracy

You can never stop movie piracy because when you do it, you don't have to pay for it. Why would some college kid, who has no money in the first place, want to pay $20-30 dollars for a movie he can go on DC++ and download for free. I have DC++ and I have no problem with downloading movies from that. I have no problem because of the massive salaries paid to actors for movie roles. I don't find it fair that a person gets paid 20 million dollars to make a movie and be famous.

Doubt It

I really doubt that this will stop piracy. The technology may cut down on piracy for a while but people will just figure out a way around it. I think that they are just hurting themselves by putting so much effort into it because people are going to find a way around it. It's stupid to waste money because your are losing money from sales. I do not understand it.

download

I think that this will work, but not very well. It might at first stop piracy, but not for long. The movie companies simply cannot stop the people that record the movies at the theatre. One way or another the movie is going to be available to the public.

Downloading

I don't think that this will work because no one will pay 30$ to download a movie when it is already on dvd. I think that there would be some way for computer hackers to be able to use this to their advantage. I don't think it would be an effective way to stop piracy.

to expensive

This will never work, though it is a good idea. It wont work because it will coast 20-30$, this is 20-30 dollares more than what you would pay if you just bootlegged them. There are to many people out there that are to smart and who could just cheat the system.

Hell no this won't work. Why

Hell no this won't work. Why would anyone want to do this? If I was paying the same amount I would rather have a "real" dvd with a case and everything. And if you have a dvd you can take the movie anywhere, instead of just watching on your computer.

Don't think so

20 to $30 for a movie that you have to 2 some time to download depending on your connection plus just having it on ur pc sounds really crazy to me! As far as piracy is concerned, well someone will find a way through that one as well!
