The purpose of considering your audience is to seriously take into account any piece of communication - written, visual, or oral - affects other people. By acknowledging the beliefs of your audience and that they have good reasons for believing what they do, you are showing that you have respect for them.

  • 1. Generate a list of audience characteristics. The idea is to generate as full a list as you can of any and all characteristics shared by your intended audience. For instance: attitudes, backgrounds, beliefs, and habits.
  • 2. Imagine your audience at the moment they encounter the communication you intend to make. Imagine
  • 3. Filter your lists: Decide which characteristics are most relevant to the purpose you have so far developed.
