Are these data map analysis' to explain what is being communicated using the rhetorical process steps, or are we to use the maps in our own means using the process steps?
I'm not sure that I understand the second part of your sentence, but you should analyze a map that you locate online using the rhetorical elements in Compose, Design, Advocate (sense of purpose, audience, context, medium, strategies, arrangement).
I'm not quite sure how you might make it "easy to see what the purpose, audience, etc is without having to explicity say it." You should explicitly reveal the purpose, audience, context, and so on by citing elements of the text itself and referencing our readings where applicable.
I'm not too concerned about spacing on this activity. Just make sure that your analysis is insightful and thorough and the rest should take care of itself.
This is covered in the assignment prompt:
Locate a sample data map online. Bring in a 2 page written rhetorical analysis of your data map (as an electronic file—not printed) based upon the elements outlined in Compose, Design, Advocate (sense of purpose, audience, context, strategies, arrangement, medium). Make sure to include the link to the data map in the document, and make sure that it is a whole document, not a disconnected assemblage of parts.
You control the copyright of any photos you take, and it is likely that any trademarks that would be on the bus (and thus in the image) would be city property, which would place them in the public domain. You should be able to use any photos of the bus that you generate without concern.
there was a site that i found with stock photos of chicago and it states at the bottom of the page that its public domain. i was wondering if you would still construde the site as unsafe?
It's up to you to determine legitimacy. Public domain declarations are tricky, because, technically, the work creator holds the copyright whether it is wanted or not. Creative Commons licensing does offer a public domain declaration option, although these particular works don't seem to have exercised it.
Notice also the stipulations at the bottom of the page:
"But if you intend to use an image you find here for commercial use, please be aware that standards for such use are higher. Specifically, you should assume no model release was obtained and pictures featuring products or property should be used with care."
This means that before using any images with people in them for a commercial deployment you would need a written release from those depicted (this is a "model release"). Also, you would need to secure permission for any images that contain trademarks or other protected content (so a picture with a huge Coca-Cola logo would require permission from the Coca-Cola company).
In short, you could probably use images from this site if they don't contain people or protected content.
With regards to the midterm take-home, the assignment calls for a brochure from a local establishment. I happen to possess one from out of state that meets the criteria. Would using this be a problem?
On the week 3 calendar you have activities posted about class on the 21st, however this is martin luther king day. Do we have class that monday?
Submitted by physicschic on Sun, 01/13/2008 - 19:26.If it's an official school holiday, we do not have class. The schedule will have to be adjusted.

Submitted by jtirrell on Sun, 01/20/2008 - 21:46.I think my question is similar to the one above. Are we supposed to arrange our analysis such that each element is clearly spelled out? For example:
The purpose is this...the audience is this...and so forth making direct reference to the readings we have been doing
Or should we write it such that it is easy to see what the purpose, audience, etc is without having to explicity say it?

For Wednesday assignment do you want the font double spaced? or single?
And there is no location to post the assignment up. Do you want us to bring a hard copy to class?
Submitted by CatTail1986 on Mon, 01/21/2008 - 21:34.If I wanted to take a picture of a CityBus bus would I need their permission? I also might want to take a picture from within a bus as well.

Submitted by physicschic on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 06:27.Your design plans should already be posted:

You should have been revising this plan continually. I plan to give the client the URLs for each group's design plan.
