Linkin Park! Oh yeah (^_^)

Hello everyone,
I decided to do my analysis on the CD album on Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory"
http://www.forfeitthegame.com/album-art-ht.html
This album sold over 24 million copies and made the #2 on the US billboard2000.
Their music is filled with deep lyrics, that touches the tip of the most uncomfortable, sadness, and anger that is pushed on you unexpectedly in life.
Most of the songs are influenced by Bennington's (lead singer) child hood.
Where there was:
- child abuse
- drugs
- a divorce
- and deep isolation
His music helps you hear what you deeply feel about others and yourself with related circumstances in your life in a hard alternative rock style.
So now that you know a bit about the music type lets analysis the CD cover shale we.
The front cover shows a solider branded in the center with burns slightly spread out from the core of the solider. This image of the solider is mysterious but strong at the same time. As the title states it "Hybrid Theory" which may mean that as a hybrid the artist is a combination of two halves isolated into one being, to create something different with additional functions from the pure breed.
There are two elements in this front cover wind(wings) and earth (the solider) with these elements combine you create this solider of additional power to escape from the enemy.
On the CD cover the solider is still there, rather this time it is in a darker medium with a list of the songs that are on the CD. Almost like a preview of what you would expect from the CD and what the image is trying to convey to the consumer. The color is not red (color of blood or power) rather it is burgundy or scarlet which gives it a sense of depth and minimal power to your eyes. Because what the artist really wants to sell to you is his music the chance for you to hear what you may feel.
The picture of the group is very puck but real. They capture themselves in a real everyday kind of setting. With a street ally looking the way it does without care. They come off as a bit scary but still maintaining their mortal aspect of them. The main singer that is in the middle has sun glasses to hide his eyes...why?
Could it be because he is trying to over emphasis that he is the one that is hidden by view but is the sole person that stands out from the rest. The black lines like a silent film gives a sense that this emotion is not new but long lasting and affected.
The next image is filled with illustration of faces and writing that does not linearly come together, but in a collage setting it fits with the rest. The shading and overlapping may suggest one emotion is taped on/recorded on other emotions and continues to propagate on and on and on until their is no white spaces until you are heard (showing the song list again).
Later on in the booklet you see the artists closer but in a dime color setting. The nickel silver dark shading becomes a film a window to what is behind this CD and artist. It breaks them down from true color hues from their group picture to a less shaded solo image. This time the photographer chooses images that reveal the depth of each individual's eyes and face profile.
This gives you a more intimate connection with each artist, further helping you relate, that they are just human..they were once a "no body" like you. Nothing has changed in them only their name recognition.
I love their music I feel that their words have a very poetic influence on breaking out what you feel and releases you from becoming so isolated.
I agree that the picture of the band has more meaning that just meets the eye. The fact that the main singer has sunglasses on may suggest that he believes the eyes are the gateway to the soul and so therefore he must hide his because his soul is revealed in his music. That may be entirely too deep and not the intent of the artists, but hey the meaning that the artist meant to convey doesn't really matter in the end, what matters is the experience it ultimately gives the viewer. Another thing that pops out to me is that they are trying to portray themselves as hard with the background of the picture being an alley with a torn down building and an old looking building behind it. They may try to come off as hard, but their music isn't really all that hard and has a great beat. Overall I guess the picture portays them as hard, but not too hard, I mean how hard can a guy be if he has pink hair?

As a 7th grader adjusting to the switch between Elementary school and Jr. High, I could definitely relate to the emotion of the lyrics. I always thought the cover was neat, but never really thought about what it meant. That's interesting how you connected the wings to the soldier having additional power to escape from the enemy. Also the band name and soldier images are done with spray paint stencil appearance. Although some experts would disagree about a band member designing their own cover, the album was designed by Mike Shinoda. Mike majored in illustration and designed the cover for Hybrid Theory. This gives the artwork an advantage as the designer knows the lyrics and is competent at design. Joseph Hahn also majored in illustration. He has directed and conceptualized some of the band's music videos in which it is obvious they have a more artistic and sometimes illustrated feel to.

Having Mike Shinoda and Joseph Hahn design the illustration really helps their music breath through the image better.
