  3. Ask one question about the course (this includes questions about the instructor).

Olivia's Personal Introduction

1. My name is Olivia, I am an English major (professional writing option) and I'm a junior. I love writing, but I also love travelling. I studied abroad last spring in Oulu, Finland for five months, and it was amazing. I'm going to tour Eastern Europe this summer for a month (specifically Istanbul and Budapest - and plenty of places in between) and I want study in South Korea where I can teach ESL for my last semester or after graduation. However, I have no idea what I want to do as a career once I settle down (if I ever do).

2. I hope to gain new technological skills which will help me greatly in this advanced society (is anything on paper anymore?) I think I'll be able to apply these skills to almost any career I choose, as well as every day life. This class also fills a requirement for the professional writing option.

3. Will we do any web design (like HTML stuff) in this class?

Maria's Post

1. My name is Maria Celenza. I am an English major, emphasis in Professional Writing, and a Psychology minor. I love to write, but more specifically I would like to (in the future) write about movies, books, sitcoms, perhaps be a critic and eventually write my own pilot. In addition to being a full-time student, I also work (a lot) at Fox and Hound. I guess an interesting fact about me is that I know sign language and sometimes I sign when I talk out of habit.
2. I am not what you would call "computer savvy." I actually am sort of out of touch with the whole world of technology. I figure if I want to be successful I should start learning and enhance my resume with new computer skills and programs.
3. Where are you from?

Erin Brennan

1. Hi, my name is Erin Brennan. I'm a sophomore, and an English major (Professional Writing). I'm also a journalism minor. I'm from Rhode Island, and I'm also on the cross country/track team here at UNCW where I run distance events. Other than running I like to go to the beach, and read.

2. I enrolled in this class because I heard good things about it from a student from my essay writing class, as well as a student in my journalism class. Also, I needed it for my major. I expect that this class will allow me to try new ways in which I can exercise my writing in an increasingly technological world.

3. Will this class require working with creating websites, or will be it be more focused on things like web writing?

Why Hello

That Guy's picture

My name is Navid Sharifian and I am a Prof Writing Major with a minor in digital arts. I enjoy reading and writing and have always been fascinated with computers. I have wasted countless hours just tinkering with them. My entire family is from Iran. I was born in Arlington Texas, GO LONGHORNS.

I hope to get a better understanding of the media market on the internet in this day and age. I also hope to learn how to apply writing to the internet in a professional manner.

Who is your favorite character on the Venture Brothers?
-Mine are Henchmen 21 and the recently deceased 24.

Joey Rabin Introduction

My name is Joey Rabin and I am a junior from West Windsor, NJ. West Windsor is a small town in central Jersey right outside of Princeton. I am an English major at UNCW and plan to go to law school after graduating. I like baseball and I am a big NY Yankees fan.

In this class I expect to learn about communication through technology. I feel there is a huge aspect of networking and communication that I do not take full advantage of due to my lack of knowledge in the field of technology. This along with graduation requirements motivated me to enroll in the class.

What benefits will this class provide in day to day lifestyle vs. a business environment?

Justin's post

Hey, my name is Justin Lacy, and I’m a junior, double majoring in English (Professional Writing) and Music. I’m majoring in both because I couldn’t make up my mind on which I’d rather study. I play guitar in the UNCW Jazz Guitar Ensemble, and I’m also in a new Americana band called Charlie the Horse. In the future, I want to make a living writing about music, teaching music, or performing, or all three, which is most likely the only way I’ll keep from starving.

In taking this class, I hope to apply the things I’ve learned in other writing classes to more technological mediums. I’ve been conflicted with the dying out of newspapers and magazines since I became interested in writing professionally, and I’d like to learn ways to use the internet and computers to write through this transition.

Will we be using html in the class?

Introduction to Me

1. My name is Ashley Barker. I am a senior here at UNCW. I was born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina and I don’t want to ever go back. I am an English, Professional Writing, major with minors in Creative Writing and Journalism. I currently work in the sports department at the StarNews, so read the sports section and you might find some of my work. Other than writing, I love to play soccer, watch professional football (go Patriots!), go to the beach, and read.

2. Last semester I took my senior seminar class early and it was focused on technology and the Web 2.0 phenomenon. I really enjoyed it because we got to individually focus a technology aspect on something of our choice. So, my entire semester was devoted to researching how Twitter is used by journalism. I learned so much from that class that I wanted to hopefully continue it by taking this class. When I become a journalist, I want to know how to use different technologies appropriately so that I can broaden my audience and reach more people.

3. Why did you come to UNCW to teach?

Hey!

My name is Claire LaSure and I am an English major. I want to write for a living, probably for magazines. I love to travel and will be going to India this summer for 2 weeks. I also enjoy hiking, scuba diving, and horse-back riding.

I'm taking this class because I enjoyed being in 204 with Dr. Tirrell last year and because it satisfies a requirement. I hope to gain more technological experience with this class, because the more you know about computers the more valuable it seems you become in the work force. I also know that in my profession I will probably have to write in online formats, and I hope I become more savvy with online mediums and how they work.

Will every project be a group project?

T.J. Personal Introduction

.

1. I am T.J. Mulligan. I just turned 21 on December 26th and was born in New Jersey. I moved to Mooresville, NC when I was 16 years old and I am currently a junior at UNCW. I am a Communication Studies major with a Journalism minor. I am a huge sports fan and spend most of my time playing or watching sports. My favorite sports team is the New York Yankees. I work as a part-time server and enjoy going out with my friends in my spare time.

2. I am not really sure what I am going to get out of this class, but I hope that I learn more about technology and the computer. I have pretty basic computer skills, but I would also like to learn some new programs that I can use in my life after college. Technology is ever evolving and I think that it is important to learn about some of the new technology in the world today.

3. I was wondering why you chose to come to UNCW and what you like and dislike about it so far? Also, what made you want to teach this class?

Allyson's Personal Introduction

1. My name is Allyson Lorick. I am technically a senior, and I plan to graduate in another year or so. Last semester I decided that I was interested in picking up an English major, with a concentration in Professional Writing. This decision leaves me as a double major, the other in Communication Studies, and Journalism minor. Needless to say, I have a pretty heavy load until I finally graduate. I also work at Fox and Hound at Mayfaire, and actually thoroughly enjoy working there; however, I find myself there a little too often on occasion. I enjoy writing and studio production, and hope to find my way into either or both of those fields when I graduate. I absolutely love music, and I have a true ambition to teach music theory if I ever get the chance. I enjoy all sports, except when the Yankees are playing; kidding. [RED SOCKS, COWBOYS, and TARHEELS], end of story.

2. Upon enrolling in Writing and Technology, I was intrigued simply because I find myself slightly challenged when it comes to new technology and computers. I anticipate that the class will enable me to be more confident and knowledgeable with programs and numerous aspects of computer use. Once my computer competency improves, landing a job in nearly any field will become more likely. I expect that this course will leave me equipt with necessary knowledge in this era of constant advancement.

3. What kind of material will we cover within Writing and Technology?

1) I'm Amber Hughes and I'm currently a junior at UNCW. I'm an English major with a journalism minor. I'm the News Editor of the campus newspaper, The Seahawk, so that takes up a lot of my time. I also like to read a lot, especially sappy chick-lit novels.

2) I'm especially interested in learning more about Google Maps. We use them sometimes at the paper, and I would like to become efficient with them. I am also interested in the social networks like Facebook and Twitter and what they mean to us as a social outlet and news outlet.

3) Are the projects just turned into you, or do we have to present them in class?

Hi! My name is Chase...

1. Hey everyone. My name is Chase Holfelder and I'm from Cary, NC. This is my first semester back at UNCW after taking a few years off to pursue music professionally. I started a band here in Wilmington in '05 and after signing a record deal a year later, everyone in the group decided to put school on hold to give the whole music thing a shot. We had some success and toured the entire country numerous times. We also landed a couple songs in several shows on MTV including The Hills and Real World. You can hear some of the band's music at www.myspace.com/themileafter and my solo recordings at www.myspace.com/chaseholfelder.. but that's enough of the shameless self-promotion... :-)

2.I enrolled in this class after hearing good things from a friend and because I'm extremely interested in web 2.0 and writing.

3. Will there be any HTML/web-design in this class?

Bethany Newlin's Intro

  • I really want to learn how to do more with web pages. I have taken numerous digital multimedia classes, but I want to learn how to apply them when I make my own website.
  • Will we be creating a website I can use for my resume?

3. Why did you decide to become a professor?

Amanda's Introduction

3. I can't remember how many group projects there will be and individual projects.

Amy's Introduction

Hi, I'm Amy. I am from Wilmington. This is my first semester back at UNCW after a couple semesters at Cape Fear as a transient student. Pretty much all I do, other than school, is work. I also play the cello.

I'm in this class because it's required for the Professional Writing option. I'm really not sure exactly what to expect out of this class.

What experience have you had in this subject area, outside of teaching this course?

Intro

My name is Wes King. I am an English major with a professional writing focus. My intentions are to go to law school.

From this class I hope to gain a greater understanding of professional writing and a greater understanding of the correspondence with technology. The regularity of this cours e as well as necessity for my major were my motivations for enrollment.

What has been your favorite campus to work on thus far.

Ashley Ladd's Introduction

1. My name is Ashley Ladd. I am from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. I am an English major - Professional Writing option. I also plan to either move to California or New York City after graduating from college.
2. In this class I expect to learn more about writing while incorporating it with technology, like the internet and blogging, etc. I think that the internet is an important part of everyone's lives these days and it is important to be up to date with all of the constant technological advances.
