Materials Analysis

The Materials Analysis is a brief group Google Document (~500 words) written that explicates the features of your service learning materials/activities and what they have accomplished or will accomplish. The Materials Analysis must clarify how these materials/activities target an audience, suit a context, and accomplish a purpose. Service learning clients will have access to the Material Analyses, so think of this as a report that articulates how your group furthered your client's project. An effective structure for the Materials Analysis is outlined below:

  1. Introduction: Introduce your topic by providing relevant background information about the current situation. Identify the project's goals, where it was when you first became involved with it, and what your materials/activities have done to advance it. The introduction is generally one or two paragraphs.

  2. Body: It likely is effective to examine your group's materials/activities individually while paying appropriate attention to the connections among them. Identify specific, concrete features of the materials/activities and explain how these features help them target an audience, fit a context, and achieve a purpose. The body should constitute the bulk of your Materials Analysis.

  3. Conclusion: Briefly reiterate how your materials/activities advance the project and key ways they do this. The conclusion generally is no longer than a solid paragraph.

Remember that an analysis does not use first person; it should not talk about you nor your design process. The Materials Analysis is like a legal case. It should establish an argument to prove in the introduction. It should then present its evidence in the body. Lastly, it should make its closing argument in the conclusion.

Once your group has completed its Materials Analysis, you will submit it to me electronically using the form below. Once your Google Doc is ready for submission, make certain that its "Share" setting is "Public on the Web," and then enter the document's URL in the form below. Please only submit one Materials Analysis per group. Feel free to contact me with specific questions.
