Senate demands accountability on war

weekly discussions

This article talks about how the Senate wants reports on the progress of the war in Iraq but has also turned down the Democratic plan to require President Bush and his administration to make a timeline for the U.S. troops to withdrawal. The Senate wants the Bush administration to give a good explaination to not only them, but the American people as well, a successful plan of action to end successfully the war in Iraq. There are a few opinions in the article as well. I just want to know what you truly feel about this topic. Do you really think the war in Iraq is aimless, or is it a successful war for our country?

The War

I think the war in Iraq is not aimless. If we were to pull out our troops now; all of the casualties that are armed forces have suffered would have less meaning then if we finish the job we started. I think our soliders have been successful out there in trying to establish a democratic government.

NOT AIMLESS

I do not know that much about the war in Iraq currently but i do not think that the war in Iraq is aimless. I think that pulling out our troops now would be a very bad idea because we have our soliders out their trying to make a difference and pulling them out without accomplishing our goals would make everything meaningless.

support the war

I still support the troops in Iraq and I feel that pulling them out is a bad idea. The article said that it would give terrorists a false hope that they have defeated us. I agree with this statement. We need to make sure that all goals are accomplished before we end the war. I do agree with the article though that President Bush needs to keep the public updated on what is going on, but not necessarily give a timeline to end the war. The war will be over when the Iraqi people can defend for themselves and remain a free and independent people.

I agree

I believe that the Bush administration should have to update the American people on the war. At first I followed the events on the war in the begining but then it just seemed like it faded off from the public's ear. I know that the war is still going on but I want to know more than that. I believe that this war is not in vain but I would like to hear whats happening and I want to know if the whole purpose of why we went to war in the first place is still the same reason of why we are still there. Also I think that the public should hear from the soldiers points of view of what our country has done for the Iraqi people that has positively changed their way of life.

war

I as well as a few others that have commented support the war. I do however feel sorry for those soldiers who lost their lives and also the lives of their families. I don't think it is aimless, but lately I don't know where it is going. I also think that those people who are complaining and going on strike should just support the troops (not necessarily the war) and stop all the yelling and arguing. I have rambled on about my thoughts for a few sentences, but basically I support the war and do not think it is aimless

point

there is a point to the united states being in iraq. it is not aimless, it seems that way for sure - but there is a point. if we pull the troops out now, the iraqi troops arent ready to do things on their own. the rebels (i believe) do have a hope that they can just wait until we leave. the point of this war (as i see it, but im pretty uneducated on the matter) is to liberate a country that very inhumane things are going on. similar things like the situation in iraq are happening in other countries, though, but where is the UN? that is another story...

Completely Pointless

I think that this occupation is completely pointless. For one it is not a war it is an occupation. Troop movement is not war unless congress votes on it.
We all went into this conflict being told that we are looking for weapons of mass destruction. We were also told that osama and saddam were good old friends. I have yet to see any of this.
Yeah saddam was an evil dictator, but his people had food, electricity and jobs. Not only that, there weren't car bombs going off there everyday. Now during our occupation there are power outages and some people don't have jobs. As an Iraqi I might have been happier with saddam.
There are evil dictators all over the world. Why did we pick saddam and who is next.
I don't see and end to this we still have troops in korea and other places of previous conflict. Pulling out now may lead to a collapse in the structure of the Iraq government.

I am hesitant to say that

I am hesitant to say that the war in Iraq is pointless. Many American along with Iraqi solders have died in this conflict. I think for us to decide whether it is aimless or not is to look at how the individual Iraqi people lives have been changed. We should also look to see how the government is holding up. I think it would be a bad idea to leave an unstable country to fend for themselves. But, there is always the money and human resource factors. Can we be spending that time and money on our own country to better it which we all know the money being spent in Iraq probably will not be spent to better our lives.

Trust

I believe we need to trust our president. Yes, some may not agree with President Bush, but he is the one in charge of our country and I think he does a lot for our country. I don't believe he needes to the American public unless he thinks he does. And if he doesn't think it is time to pull the toops out then we'll keep fighting. I trust that our government is taking care of our safety, our soldiers, and our freedom otherwise we would not have placed them in such positions. No, not everything the government does will we agree on, but they are still in charge.

Oil, Weapons, For kicks

What are we fighting for? I do not now and most of the american people are confused over the same concept. I have never understood politics and well frankly make no effert to try and understand them. War is never a great thing for any country, but the american governemnt sure does a great idea to blind the image of war from the american public.

I feel like this is not an

I feel like this is not an aimless war for our country. This war is to get a democratic form of government in Iraq. With this form of government, there is less likely to be any terror attacks on our country from the leaders of Iraq. The United States taking this sort of action on Iraq is just a step in out "War Against Terror".

troops

I think that it is a horrible idea to pull the troops now. If we do, we are putting to shame all of those who have given their lives for us throughout this war. I believe we need to stay in there and finish our mission, and not withdraw until that mission is accomplished, possibly a little while longer. We need the troops to know we truly supporate them.

Finally Some Progress

If anyone hasn't heard yet, while this bill was being debated a supporter of the war essentially called an opposer of the war, who was also a Vietnam veteran, a coward. I think a timetable is definitely necessary to move on from this conflict, because all I've heard for the past two years is that a transition is happening but our troops aren't home yet.
