There are only a few class meetings remaining. What questions do you have about the Portfolio that can be answered during those days? What topics would you like covered?
I am a CS major and most of my work is not going to be able to be shown or appreciated over a webpage portfolio. How is this going to market my skills beyond what a resume would do.
We already discussed this in class, but I would contend that regardless of profession, it is becoming increasingly important to have a professional web presence. Concrete examples of your work communicate in ways that a blurb on your resume cannot.
Are you going to be grading on the level of skill students have with programs such as Dreamweaver? Or mostly on the actual content of the site? Should we revise the work we've done?
I'm not re-grading the work you have already done. You also don't need to be a virtuoso web designer to put up a well-organized, effective site. The same design principles we have been dealing with can transfer over to online media.
I've cleaned out my computer a few times during this course, the same with my desk, meaning I don't necessarily have all of the projects/papers that we've turned in so far in this course.
Is this portfolio moreso meant to be a "professional" portfolio of ourselves? I.E., would it be a bit more applicable for me to show off what I do in my CS courses rather than my english work? That would alleviate me having to try to rewrite all the projects we've done in 419, as well as allow me to bring a few neat CS things out of the woodwork and display them professionally.
You don't need to re-write the projects you have done. I would prefer for you to showcase what you have accomplished in 419; However, if your 419 work just doesn't fit, you can focus on what you do in your CS courses. Talk with me about what you want to accomplish and we'll go from there.
Is there any definitive format you want for the displaying of each of the three projects?
e.g.
Do you want just the final projects up there or do you want statements of purpose, design plans, post mortems, etc?
How much of the project you include is up to you. In most cases, I would think that you would just showcase the main text itself, but for some purposes you might want to make that ancillary material available. I don't have a specific stipulation about whether to include those materials or not.
Maybe more information about Layers and Divs on dreamweaver. How to make the layers scalable. That might be a little in depth for this class but besides that, I think that in class work time would be good.
That's probably too specific to be covered in a class workshop, but you should talk to other people in the class and me about any specific problems you run into in these areas. You will have work time in class.
I don't have any topics that need to be covered. I would just like to be able to work on it during class time.
OK. You will be able to do that. There will probably be class workshops going on, but you do not have to participate.
is it possible to use another website to upload our work? I used my webspace for project 2 and my H drive is almost full.
How many works should be included in a portfolio?
If you want to emphasize various kinds of work (Photoshop, Flash, and Writing), what is the best way to present them?
Who should a portfolio site be aimed at?
How do you get prospective employers to look at your portfolio site?
How can you present your skills without sounding full of yourself?
I don't really have a stipulation on the number of works to include in the portfolio. I would like to see all the ones you did in 419 this semester, but if that doesn't fit your goals for your portfolio, then so be it.
To figure out how to present yourself without being pushy, you should do a Google search for portfolios in your field. Find some that you think strike the right tone, and see how they are constructing that tone.
What contact and personal information should be included?
Maybe cover some dreamweaver. I always have trouble getting it to work right.
Contact information is always a little tough to answer, because you likely don't want everything just out there on the internet where anyone can see it. It kind of depends who are talking to, but usually an email address is good. You might want to think carefully before putting any phone numbers or addresses up.
We will go over Dreamweaver basics in class.
An in depth look at Dreamweaver would be great - but mostly I'd just like time to work on it, whether in class, or via class cancellation.
We will be looking at Dreamweaver, but it will be mostly introductory. You will have time to work in class.
I would like to know more about the basics of setting up your own webpage. I would also like to know more about what programs could assist us in making our webpage more interesting.
OK, we will have a tutorial that goes over setting up a basic page in your student webspace. We'll be using Dreamweaver, which is a widely-used visual web design platform.
1.Can you show a demo (walkthrough) of how to build a site? ---this would help out a lot for those of us who are bad at coding and have limited time on how to build a website from scratch.
In the demo you could show how to link sites,
post work in one sizeable box---maybe each box could be clicked on to blow up work or scrolled over to enlarge the image on an invisble box on the screen, also maybe show how to make an email address linked, etc.
We will have a basic web tutorial. Some of the more specific things you mention, like rollovers and callouts, probably won't be in it. You should speak to classmates and me about specific things you want to do.
Does the portfolio have to have only one theme? I have one or two really good animations in 3D Studio Max. I have astronomy images of all 9 planets and some moons that I made in Photoshop (such as using different blurring tools to make Jupiter). I also have Freehand images, Photoshop pictures that don't have anything to with Astronomy, and other things.
Must we use all of our projects from this English class? My diagram connecting "Slander" by Ann Coulter, "What Went Wrong?", and a Michael Moore book based a computer scientist's article had some weird reactions from the class.
I would like to go over how to update a webpage and the basics, i havent used dremweaver in a long time and i dont really remember how.
